Bumblebees: Behaviour, Ecology, and Conservation

Lovely!
Awesome book! It's smaller than I initially thought it was going to be, which is perfect because it's easy to travel with so I can read it while commuting or visiting loved ones who live out of town. I've been a bee enthusiast for a while now, but so much of the information out there centers around honey bees. This has been a great introduction into bumbles bees. I'm about halfway through, and I learn something new on every page! I would say this book is moderately accessible. If you just have a passing interest in bees -- yeah, probably not the book for you. But if you're like me -- a hardcore hobbyist that hopes to go into entomology professionally at some point, this towed the line perfectly of being accessible and being over my head just enough to push me forward in my learning arc. Would certainly recommend though, for anyone serious about bumble bees. My favorite chapter so far is the one on thermoregulation, but every chapter is fill to the brim with incredible information. These creatures are truly fascinating.

THE bumble bee book.
This is a great reference book! I am a grad student studying bumble bees and I have found this book to be the ultimate reference. Not only is it a clearly written synthesis of what we know about bumble bees, but it is also an excellent way to find other references. The in-text citations have saved my time and sanity. My only “complaint” is that it is fairly biased towards European species and research but that in truth that is an accurate reflection of bumble bee research. North America is greatly under-studied. Thanks Dr. Goulson!

Great technical book for beginners and enthusiasts
If you want to know how bumble bees live, this is the book you want. Most of the specific examples in the book are European varieties, since the author is British, but the book covers bumble bees worldwide. If you don't have a technical background this is a great starting point, and if you're an enthusiast this will really fill the gaps in your knowledge.Bumble bees are complex insects, and thanks to Dr. Goulson they're a bit easier to understand

Great book
I'm so glad there is a book like this on the market. Goulson has written a thorough, very well-written treatise on the life-history and relevant research on the charismatic and well-loved - but often not well-understood - bumblebee. With the ongoing declines in the most widespread and important agricultural pollinator, the honeybee, bumblebee species will become more and more important to a variety of crops in the Northern Hemisphere. It's important that we understand their needs and life-history traits in order to shape agricultural landscapes in ways that conserve and enhance bumblebee populations for the future.I'd recommend this for anyone who wants to understand more about this adorably clumsy/bumbling agricultural pollinator.

A well written work on wondrous creatures.
Arrived on time in good condition. As for the book, this man writes very well and is and expert on bumble bees and other insects, but he loves bumble bees and he knows a great deal about them. He set up the bumble bee conservation society to try and protect these wondrous insects from loss of habitat and pesticides - two very real problems for useful pollinators of our flowers and crops. Remember many of these species are up and working before lazy hive bees are even awake, and they keep going until it's nearly dark. They have fascinating life histories which Professor Goulson describes and explains as a biologist. He's written some other books too and they're very good as well.

excellent book on bumblebee flying, but not on intelligence
This is a great book on the general biology of bumblebees in every area except perhaps the most exciting and dynamic one - bumblebee learning & memory. This is not even mentioned. Bumblebees have to learn their environment, know how to nagivate and remember the way home. They also need to learn when flowers are ripe for nectar and how to combat complex flowers. Bumblebees are not stupid and at least 1/4 of the book should be devoted to their intelligence if "behaviour" is to be included in the title.Nevertheless, a fantastic book on what it has covered.

Excellent - easy to read, but full of information
An excellent book. Very easy to read, requiring only a minimal level of scientific language, but contains a wealth of scientific information. I read the book in early spring and learned a great deal from it, since then have spent many hours this summer observing bumblebees in the garden and in the wild with a newly inspired interest. I thoroughly recommend the book to anyone interested in wildlife.
