Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture (The Yale University Press Pelican History of Art) Paperback – Illustrated, May 1, 1984

My book just arrived, in wonderful and exemplary condition. While I am delighted to find a plethora of photos and diagrams, I am a bit disappointed that none of them are in color. However, considering that the original pictures were not in color (the book was originally published in 1965) it is to be expected. I was hoping that they had been updated along with the text. The detail is still quite fine.The text is descriptive, detailed and extensive; it is truly a scholarly tome, but one doesn't need to be a scholar to find it interesting, engaging and readable. As someone who has recently begun the study of Byzantine history, I found it fascinating - with enough Greek and Latin sprinkled in to make me think, but not get a headache! (And it isn't essential to know either language to enjoy the book.) It is clever and enlightening.Nearly 1/5 of the book is notes and references. I especially liked this as there are some details I would like to follow up on, and I have those resource references available. They also give great context to many of the 'outside' historical content. There is a list of abbreviations, a list of illustrations (I was very happy about that, Google Earth is my third arm and I can 'find' many of the building locations) and a very good glossary. I would absolutely recommend purchasing this book!

Poor quality B&W photos...tiny type font. Very disappointing.

A decent enough book, text wise, but B&W photos only throughout, no colour whatsoever. Combined with the small page size of the book and the small size of most photos relative to the page, it's difficult to get a real feel for the architecture.
