Fantastic photos and stories from the USSR side
As a modeler and photographer it was always frustrating in the 70'ties and 80'ties to search for good quality photos of Soviet aircraft. Were there only grainy, off colour pictures around? (Many taken from video materiel, apparantly). Here it is at last. Yefim Gordon has collected a huge amount of material on the Soviet Strategic Air Forces in the Cold War. Including the chilling test drop of the world's most powerful air dropped nuclear munition in 1961, the 50 megaton "izdeliye 202" H-bomb, using a special Tu-95V. The "Bear" came home on 3 engines with all wiring fried by the EMP ("ElectroMagnetic Pulse"). All engines flamed out and one refused to restart. Rewards of up to 40.000 roubles had to be split afterwards between the crew with a lot argument involved. All crewmembers died though! from radiation effects witin a few years. A diagram explains how a regiment of Tu-22 would attack a NATO carrier group. A fascinating read! Highly recommended.
