Works great--when it works
I used this for two hours today to tie grape vine canes. When it worked, it was very fast and easy to use. But:It jams easily, so you have to keep a tiny screwdriver handy to pull out bent staples.I broke the hook that holds the staple spring in place. -- very flimsy. I can still get the spring out using a screw driver. Now the part that grabs the tape doesn't work. (see update, below). If I can't fix it tonight I'll probably return it.Too bad -- I really liked it when it worked.Update next day:After learning how to anticipate the problems, it's definitely worth the trouble. You'll need to wear a glove on your working hand to protect it from sharp edges. Frequent bent or jammed staples. When you install a new tape roll, you may need to pull off a foot or two because sometimes it sticks and prevents the "grabber" from grabbing it.Again, when it works, you can really move fast!Second update:Now that I'm getting used to anticipating potential jams, it works great. Buy some replacement blades. Once they get dirty, they are difficult to clean. Just install a new one.

I agree with every single negative comment posted. I received it with high hopes it would replace the twine I had been using on my grape vines. All sorts of disappointments with this device. As another reviewer mentioned, the directions were worthless. I, too, resorted to viewing a short Youtube clip posted by a purchaser. As others stated, it sometimes operates as it should but in my opinion, more often than not, the device did not operate. All sorts of issues ranging from the tape would not properly feed, pieces of tape that were cut got stuck in the jaws, the stapling jaw failed to staple, the cutter failed etc. etc. I tried it for an hour and returned to the house to package it up for a return to Amazon and full refund. I drove to the nearest UPS store (45 minutes away) to get the thing out of my hands. And oh, yes...it doesn't come with staples or tape which added up to an over $150 purchase---for something that simply is not reliable. I'll stick to twine....

I have had Max Tapener tools like this for years without problems so I thought I would try these. So I bought three of these and two are now no longer functioning. Upon initial use of this tool it seemed as good as the Max Tapener brand but after three weeks of use we began having troubles. At first it just seemed normal, a jammed staple - no problem, the tape not catching correctly once and awhile, and a mechanism jamming. We are using these in a nursery and the use is moderate - but not excessive. Wish I would have spent the extra $15. for the much better Max Tapener model.

Very handy, but treat it gently
This is my second tapener through Amazon. Anyone who has used these before can testify that they have several weak points that will cause them to be useless, if any one of them is lost. The spring plunger has come apart a few times and one piece falls off when it goes to the ground (good luck finding a small part in thick mulch). Staples jam up from time to time and sometimes the tape does not unroll properly and you have to pull it off the reel before you staple it. It's hard to explain what can go wrong until you try it yourself. Bottom line, I use this constantly as I tie up my blackberry vines and grapes onto a trellis. So, my advice is to buy it, but treat it gingerly and be careful about how you thread the tape and load the staples.

Definitely Needs Improving
Handy, but definitely needs improving. The tape doesn't feed out very well. It tends to get out of the track on the stapling end as well as pulling loose from the catch that holds it. The tape holder snaps shut but doesn't hold well. When I turn it so the tape compartment door downward the tape tends to fall out and unroll. The staples get hung quite a bit so I have to carry a tool to get them unstuck. If you get aggravated easily I don't recommend this tool.

Don't bother with this one!
I had watched a neighbor using a device like this. and decided that it would make it easier to keep up with my grape vines--but, alas, it was not to be.And it was not a pleasant experience--even from the first moments--because the directions were totally inadequate! Luckily, there was a YouTube video that was much clearer, but even with the knowledge of how to load the device, it never worked reliably: it would grab the tape one time, but not the next 4 or 5; it would staple the ends together now and then (more then!).I sent it back and won't buy another from this manufacturer!

Not a Time Saver.
Had a number of issues with this tapener. I bought it to tie grapevines to fruit wires. When the tapener worked it was great, but I soon found that the staples would jam frequently. Also everytime the tape is cut, it leaves a piece of scrap that gums up the tapener. The handle spring was not strong enough to pull the tape when you released the handle, so I kept having to tilt the tapener upside down to get it to pull the tape. At some point, the tape would frequently slip or tear off of the clasp. Very frustrating when you have a lot to tie and you want to save time. This tapener might be good for small projects, but if you have a lot to tie, I would recommend the Max tapener.

Horrible product, do not buy.
I bought this to use in my vineyard. After using it, I found several issue with it.1. The Tapener doesn’t always grab the tape used for it. On several occasions, I had to manually close the catch mechanism just to grab the tape.2. The tape doesn’t despence properly. On more the one occasion, I have to manually pull out the tape so that there was enough tape to tie my vine to the fruiting wire.3. There was a lot of wasted tape and staples. When I was using the tool to tie my vine to either grow rods or to the fruiting wire, the Tapener would either:A) work as intendedB) only staple half of the tapeC) cut off the tape would out using a staple to hold it the tape togetherOverall, don’t waste your money on this tool. If you need one, pick one up from your local farm/garden supply store. They will have a better quality one there, and have the knowledge to help you with it. I ended up returning this product.

Works good but..
Its my second season using this for tying in a vineyard paid "piece work" i thought is was good until i used a real good one you can get for 20-30$ more.. you dont have any staples that get stock or the little extra piece of tape that get stock at the tip. At the end of the day all these extra piece of tape cost you money
