Second Edition: Now and Then Railway Atlas.
I held off on buying the first edition because of the size of the maps. But the second edition (purchased) is much improved and can be recommended for those interested in what has happened to lines since closure etc.The maps are larger (the majority of previous footnotes are now in an appendix), therefore easier to read and can be compared to other rail map books. If a gripe is required, it would be some of the colours of the differing present day uses can be difficult to distinguish and require concentration (not always a bad thing).

Fascinating comparisons between then and now
It is unbelievable (with the benefit of hindsight) that so many lines were closed without mothballing or route protection. It wasn't long, for instance, before many Beeching closures were regretted (and some eventually reversed) .This is a beautifully presented and fascinating book.

Third edition with better maps
I've purchased the previous two editions of Railway Atlas Then and Now and this third edition continues with the improvements made over time. The maps are now full page and over two facing pages show how the railway network looked in 1923 and 2020. There's some enlargements for urban centres and a full station index.A useful book for the historian or the casual browser.

Great value, really useful.
Excellent book; two atlases in one! Ideal for reference purposes.

Very useful for railfans
I already have several rail atlases covering different periods from pre-grouping to the present day. This one compares (for each area) the situation as it was in 1923 with the current situation. Where applicable if the railway has been converted to a road or footpath this is shown. My only criticism is that there are only so many readily distinguishable colours and it is sometimes difficult to determine the status of a particular route.Recommended.

Excellent Book
This book was a present for my son, who is English. He was delighted with the quality and the illustrations and information provided. The book was sent from England and arrived in perfect condition in a reasonable amount of time.

How much UK railway trackage is totally gone as of 2015!
Excellent coated paper stock, with bright colors and slick finish. Printing details sharpest of UK rail books I have received. Extensive Index to old and new maps fits well with Beeching "Reshaping UK Railway" report. One appreciates the British sacrifices required to endure through WWII with a rail system stretched to its limits. Robust surface roads and truck transportation were not to come until the end of "Steam" but these 2015 era rail maps illustrate what survives.
