A book on reading manorial records that is not for beginners
The core of this book is a set of images from old documents, with notes, followed by transcripts and translations of them. This is preceded by general background information on manorial records and some short exercises, and followed by a short dictionary of Latin words, an Appendix of Latin grammar, a page with examples of how letters were written, and examples of abbreviated forms of words. This is not a book for a novice in palaeography, and I think it would not be suited to someone without at least a very basic knowledge of Latin. It would have benefits from more examples of how letters of the alphabet were written rather than a single one-page table. It is probably best regarded as a reference work and refresher for someone with some knowledge of both Latin and old handwriting.

Full of useful information
Packed full of useful information and a helpful starting point in understanding manorial records. Useful to begin tackling some of the abbreviated Latin words. However the book is sadly let down by the appallingly reproduced sample documents (the half decent digital image example 11 is soft focused). This sadly makes the associated line by line examples almost useless and very hard work. However it is possible to make use of some of these example when used in conjunction with your own manorial documents... just so much harder!

Born in a Manor?
I got this book to help me in researching my family history. It should provide some help.I will not know how useful it is until it has been used.Although it is a general book on manorial records it should help in looking for the old records of the local manor.
