Was very concerned about ordering this set after reading all the reviews about this item and the Royal 30 and 36. Having received the item and used it, am very pleased and at this price point, would have tolerated much worse.Most of the concerns in the reviews are correct, but the impact and expectation seem overblown. Yes the board surface is thin, but would never know without leaning on the board. Yes all the details look hand worked by something short of a professional, but those touches are unique, rustic and endearing and look just like the photos, no surprises there. Yes the green piece holder is cheap and you have to be careful putting the pieces away, but that should be a no brainer for wood pieces. Yes the claps are flimsy, but treat them gently and with intention and they will work just fine and ought to last. Yes it appears if I fling the queen across the room she might lose one of her crown jewels.I suspect some folks are buying these for children who might abuse any board. This is not the product for that purpose. If you are a sometimes gamer and want a nice portable board with good size and a nice feel, and are willing to take care of your stuff, then what you see in the photos is what you will get. At this price, less than 1/3 the price of an entry-level Staunton set, not sure how you could ask for more. If you play quite more frequently, well you probably ought to invest in a more durable set. If I had to criticize anything, would be the shape of the bishop which we do not like, but it is just as shown.One small thing not mentioned elsewhere, the set comes in a usable cardstock box, and while it looks and is cheap, it functions to protect the outside surfaces of the board while storing or transporting. Not surprisingly, there is a strong wood-finish odor when first opened, set it outside for an hour or two and you are ready to go.

Lol! I wanted to write the review for these pieces even before they had arrived, but I was afraid of the previous bad reviews. So I waited till the set was delivered. I am from India, and I had it delivered to my cousin at US, since I plan to visit in April. I am a fan of "fantasy chess font by Maurizio". So when I searched for pieces of that style, I was disappointed. I then searched for "figurine" pieces, that led me eventually to this set. Most of the people who give any rating less than 5 do not understand one thing - this is a fantastic set reminiscent of the figurine notation + covering for the fact that some people fake being confused between the Knight and Bishop when they have lost (not anymore, with this set)+ very cheap ( lol, thats why I bought it before reviewing...I think even $80 is still worth the price for this one.)So people, if you want to concentrate completely on the game, and not on identifying the chess pieces during a game, this is the set. A round table, an owl table lamp, and if situation is really boring, a glass of fine whiskey...is where this set would fit well!!P.S. There is no other chess set that resembles figurine notation....except for a variation of this set with lousy Bishops.Royal 48, indeed!!😎

Firstly, i'm not a chess set connoisseur but i'm very pleased with this set. I was a little nervous due to some of the reviews of the smaller sets by the same company but since the pieces were hand carved i thought i'd take a shot. I think most of the criticisms i've read were a little overblown. There was one about the numbers and letters on the side of the board being burnt on so sloppily that the reviewer couldn't read them. Mine look just fine. Of course if you buy the smallest board they make maybe the letters aren't so easy to read, i don't know. This 48 size board is very impressive looking to me. The pieces in the set i got are flawless and really nice to look at while playing. One thing that could be improved that i have found so far is the interior lining for the knights and the bishops could be formed for those pieces better as the bishops don't fit as well as they could, though they do fit with a little persuasion. Of course they could use a fancier lining and non-plastic form as well but at this price point I don't really expect them to and the one that comes with this seems fine to me. Overall compared to the poor quality of some other mass produced products these days, this is a find. I'll try to remember to post back if the hinges, clasps, etc. start falling off. very happy so far.

I bought this as a gift for my 19 year old who loves to play chess at school with his friends. I was very pleased with the quality and I feel its a good value. I am currently on the search for a carrying case for it. I will probably buy another one for my other son to take to school with him. Love the board and pieces and I feel it is well made. The reviews were interesting on this and I think if you're a real chess expert you might want something different but really, for the price, it is perfect, well made, and great for the "average" player. My son played 200+ times with friends his first semester on his roommate's board and this will be a perfect set for him since his roommate is changing schools and taking his set with him! It is not cheap looking at all. FYI, I tend to buy mid range and will pay extra to get better quality.

I bought this as a gift for my son as a replacement set for home since he took our regular one away to keep in his dorm. I wanted something fun and different and looked at a variety of chess sets before deciding on this one and I am so glad I did. First of all the pieces look updated and fresh versus the standard set and the board shows the letter/number borders if you discuss moves. It is nicely made, substantial and well worth the price. The feature that I love the most is that the pieces attach to the underside and fold up so that pieces are neatly stored, rather than being thrown into a flimsy box and always having a missing piece.'

Was very happy with this set, was more than expected. Would be perfect if it had a case or handle.

il prodotto mi è arrivato con la parte interna rotta, le due regine sono state montate male, in generale la scacchiera denota una scarsa attenzione ai dettagli.sconsigliata assolutamente.

Es wird nicht zuviel versprochen. Schöne Figuren und ein schönes Brett.Ist ein wenig leicht, aber solide verarbeitet. Wenn man die Figuren oder das brett nicht gegen eine Wand donnert passiert auch nichts.Es gibt sicherlich bessere Schachbretter, aber für den Preis ist das Brett, mitsamt sehr hübscher Figuren, kaum zu schlagen.Einziges wiiiinziges Manko ist eben das Gewicht. Wer gerne mit schweren Figuren in die Schlacht zieht, wird weniger Spaß dran haben, aber qualitativ schlecht sind sie keineswegs.Nur zu emfpehlen :>
