War, Espionage, Spies, Intrigue and Romance
War, Espionage, Spies, Intrigue and Romance. A Suitable Match by Jayne Davis is filled with all of these. Ms. Davis , inspired by the writings of Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, has very capably joined their ranks in her own voice recreating the late Georgian/early Regency period in England. The War of American Independence is over but things in Europe continue to bubble. Enter the Marstones. Lady Isabella Marstone, Daughter of the Duke, eagerly is in anticipation of the excitement of a London season, and freedom from her overbearing father’s influence, at last. Her brother the Viscount is called away to France on secret government business and unable to protect his sister. He enlists the aid of Nick Carterton, his good friend (and fellow spy!) to look after his sister in his absence. Will Isabella find a suitable match? Does Nick manage to steer her clear of a misalliance and in the process find his one true soulmate? Will England and France go to war? Ms. Davis adeptly takes the reader into 18th century England and France weaving a tale that is riveting and romantic. She has masterfully researched the era combining costumes, mores, historic events and a blended cast of characters-real and fictional. This book is the second in a series that promises to be a family saga worth reading. The reader is left wanting more and feeling bereft when the book ends. The characters are believable and become fast friends (or enemies) as the story unfolds. Excitement mounts as the third in the series is in the works – Playing with Fire will be released September 4, 2020. Hurrah! Thank you, Ms. Davis for the opportunity to review the ARC you generously sent me. Thank you for your work! Keep the outstanding stories coming! I would rate your work as worthy of many times 5 stars!

Love is suitable
Bella accepts Nick's help as a substitute for her brother, Will, during the season.Assumptions from Nick's support, (like a brother), cause the couple to take the long way in determining that they belong together. In a very suitable marriage.

In and romance
This story had the same domineering Marstone patriarch father but this time he is dying. Still trying to control his family and his daughter Isabelle. None of his manipulation works and in the end Isabelle finds her hea with Nick

The story continues
Little Bella, Will's youngest sister from Book 1 is all grown up. Well sort of, she is pretty short. But Bella like her big brother she does not want her father to dictate who she should marry. But what's a girl to do in 18th century England, especially with an overbearing despot like her father? And therein lies this interesting tale. I found it an enjoyable read.

Worth it!
I can't believe I took so long deciding to read this series! Each book has been a delight! The storyline is gripping and the characters are so likeable. The period details and descriptions are top notch and of course there is woven throughout, that iconic subtle humor that is present in only the best of this genre!

Clean and Sweet
The book is well written. Authentic behavior and speech of the times. Nice clean romance. Enjoyable read. Interaction between main characters could be more developed so you can feel the romance. Not equal to a Georgette Heyer or like Jane Austen whose characters came to life so when you finished the novel it was like leaving friends behind.

Do Wish Authors Would Do Their Research
This is the third story I have read by this author and, overall, I have enjoyed her style of writing and her characters. Although there are some of the usual tropes for romance novels based in this period, there is enough that is different to hold my interest. However, there were a few tiny historical inaccuracies in the read that jarred and one large one. Why, oh why, do novelists writing about this time period insist on having marriages take place in someone's home? The Marriage Act of 1753 declared that all marriages must be conducted by a minister in a parish church or chapel of the Church of England to be legally binding. Anyone at this time would have known this law; Isabella could not legally be married in her father's bedroom. If an author truly loves a time period, then I would assume they would be researching, researching all of the time and would catch such a glaring inaccuracy.

Another Enjoyable Read
Another enjoyable and well written story by Jayne Davis. I am pleased Lady Isobella has her own story as she was by far the feistiest Marstone sister and poor Nick Carteton didn't know what had hit him when he met her. Bella, along with her sister's had been kept virtual prisoners at their father's estate all their lives, had little experience of life and so when she was allowed to go to London she tended to get herself into scrapes which Nick had to get her out of and in doing so he came to know her very well, and his whole idea of the female he thought he wished to marry was completely changed in the end.Lord Marstone, Bella's obnoxious father intent on getting rid of his last daughter almost spoiled everything not realising Nick's father and Nick himself were sharper than him.Well worth the read I would thoroughly recommend this book.

An entertaining read
This was as an entertaining story that I read in a day. Isabella ( Bella ) had lived a solitary life after her siblings married, due to her obnoxious father’s wishes. He thought little of anyone but what suited him, politically and social standing. Bella has little idea of what happens in the world outside their manor house. Nicholas ( Nick ) son of a baron, is looking for a wife but although Bella is very pretty, she is too impulsive for him. When Bella comes to London, to find a husband (at her father’s wishes) this impetuous behaviour leads her into dangerous situations. Bella is a very thoughtful and caring person and thinks of others who are less privileged. Nick is of a similar mind and does what he can to help other. Quite a lot happens in this story, spies and blackmail, unwanted suitors, life threatening situations and a romance that just gradually happened.I enjoyed this story very much.

I knew Bella would have her own compelling story & I wasn't disappointed 🙂
I knew Bella would have her own compelling story, she was such a mixture of naivety and common sense, which was amazing with her over bearing father. I loved the way she matured into her true character in this story letting her courage/common sense help her deal with the situations she got herself into and how friendships helped her grow up.Nick was a great hero, even it was reluctantly and out of a sense of duty at the beginning. He was such a gent & I loved that he wanted Bella to marry him for love not obligation. I was so glad Bella noticed his jealousy and took a gamble on her realisation. Can't wait to see who is next in this series

Well written but didn’t grab my attention like the previous books
Jayne Davis writes well; ‘the Mrs MacKinnons’ is a favorite of mine, and I very much liked ‘Sauce for the Gander’. This book, while enjoyable, was slightly lacking in something for me. Although I liked the main characters, I didn’t feel that their relationship came over strongly enough. Also, although there was a lot happening, several situations seemed to lack conclusions. Although not my personal favourite, I look forward to her next book and have already preordered it.
