Zrínyi II assault howitzer: Armour of the Royal Hungarian Army

With only 70 units built this is a rather rare vehicle. Information on these AFVs is also few & far between.The 1st 10 pages are a basic synopsis of the origins, building, usage, & results. Most of the pics are from development & training with a few after action shots towards the end of the book. Pics are full page & fairly well reproduced with adequate captions. The translation is a bit rough in spots, but readable. Absolutely a worthwhile addition to the library if there is any interest in obscure armored vehicles of WW2.

Zrinyi II describes this little know assault vehicles and the training as well as the deployment and conflicts this machine was used in. The composition of the Hungarian units and the reason behind it deployment is very interesting. From reading this book this vehicle was a success to bad it took a while to develop and deploy. Good book with lots of pictures and detail formation that had this vehicle in combat. Very good and enjoyable

Adequate source for the scratch build modeler. Not sure if there are any factory kits available. Content is broad treatment of the vehicle including photos of operations, training and combat damaged/destroyed Zrinyi II's. Doubt there will be a lot more published on the subject so recommend you get a copy before it goes out of print.

Il volume Zrinyi II Assault Howitzer si è rivelato essere un solido elaborato tecnico.L'autore, Attila Bonhardt (e non Attilia, forse un refuso nell'annuncio di vendita), prende le mosse dal trattato del Trianon del 1920 e dalla lenta ricostruzione delle forze armate ungheresi indipendenti per spiegare la concezione, lo sviluppo e la produzione di questo misconosciuto mezzo militare: un cannone d'assalto armato di obice da 105 mm, ispirato alle coeve realizzazioni tedesche.Il libro si può suddividere in due parti. La prima, chiamata introduzione e lunga 12 pagine, affronta la genesi dello Zrinyi, ne espone le caratteristiche tecniche, riporta la laboriosa organizzazione dei reparti dell'artiglieria d'assalto, il loro addestramento e il loro impiego operativo, citando anche i nomi degli ufficiali e sottufficiali che contribuirono a formare questa branca particolare dell'esercito magiaro.La seconda parte, costituita da un'ottantina di pagine, è una galleria fotografica di Zrinyi durante esercitazioni, pause operative, riparazioni e azioni; diverse immagini sono inoltre state prese direttamente al fronte. Ciascuna fotografia è accompagnata da una didascalia.Come spesso accade in questo tipo di impostazione, si ripetono spesso informazioni di dettaglio: ad esempio, l'autore non riesce a esimersi, ogni volta, dal puntualizzare che la copertura rotondeggiante del visore del cannoniere indica l'appartenenza del veicolo in foto alla prima serie; oppure deve pedissequamente dire che manca un parafango, il cavo di traino etc. D'altro canto, si trovano sparse informazioni assai circostanziate su tipo e numero di granate caricate, modelli di faro e periscopio, strutturazione del blindato e così via.Ciò spiega in parte il mio voto. L'altra ragione è che il libro doveva essere consegnato al massimo entro il 13 giugno, quando invece è arrivato appena tre giorni fa, il 25: almeno era in ottime condizioni. In definitiva è un volume ben fatto, sebbene manchi una bibliografia cui fare riferimento, ed esplora la storia di un mezzo corazzato rimasto ai margini della storia militare della seconda guerra mondiale.

Nice crisp photographs dominate this volume about a vehicle of which there is little in the way of reference available, at least in the English language. The captions are informative and insightful, and the images themselves are printed in a nice, big size that lets the details really sing out. In terms of variation and interesting images, on the whole, they are not as varied as one would expect, but the book certainly lives up to my expectations in that it will serve as a useful reference to model one of these vehicles in kit form.

Bit repetative but good pictures. Good to see less well known vehicles getting some coverage.
