Stargate Atlantis: Season 4 [Blu-ray]
O**!
Stargate Atlantis was a great series. It only lasted half as long as ...
Stargate Atlantis was a great series. It only lasted half as long as Stargate SG1, and didn’t have the wonderful cast of Stargate SG1, but I enjoyed the series as much as the original Stargate series. I only watched a few episodes of Stargate Universe. The original Stargate series was fun and witty. Stargate Atlantis continued with the fun and wit, but Stargate Universe was dark and dumb, with an unlikeable cast.Stargate SG1 is a great example of taking a mediocre movie, the source material, and turning it into an outstanding franchise with the longest running sci-fi series in history, although Supernatural is now the longest running fantasy series in history. When I’m not watching episodic storytelling I’m reading, everything from nonfiction to westerns, but at least half of my time is spent reading sci-fi and fantasy.Sci-fi and fantasy authors I like include Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, William R. Forstchen, Joe Haldeman, Robert A. Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, George Orwell, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, John Steakley, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Andy Weir.

Very enjoyable
Though everyone has different likes and dislikes, I enjoyed both the SG1 and Atlantis videos, though the SG universe is not as good

One of the best shows I've ever seen, I crave it!!
First of all, I don't do the whole spoiler thing so i just want to say how great this show is. Stargate Atlantis is definitely one of my favorite shows, I've already watched the whole series twice, and thinking about a third time through, I honestly don't think there's a dull episode, It's a little like Stargate Sg-1, but way better, Sg-1 is pretty good seasons 1-7 but I'm struggling to get through season 8, It's just like they ran out of idea's, and the bad guy's, the Go'uld, get old very quick, but the wraith on the other hand are great villains. The only thing I didn't like about this show was that there were only 5 seasons, I literally crave this show. But all in all, if you like Si-Fi, you'll definitely love this show, and even if you don't like Si-Fi, I think you'll still like it, 5 stars all the way for this show.

50/50 The Best of Times and the Worst of Times
For starters I have to say that I am not much of a Stargate Atlantis fan. I adore the SG-1 franchise because it keeps a foot in our own reality of science and culture while taking us on sci-fi adventures through the gate. Atlantis in contrast does not give me much to relate to in my own life apart from the occasional trip to the SGC. The only thing the show offers me is almost cliche life sucking monsters and regurgitated SG-1 episodes, so much so that one can match up Atlantis characters fairly well with their counterparts on SG-1.That being said, Atlantis is still in the Stargate universe, which means I have to at least like it. I have a collection to keep up with! Stories are stories no matter what show it is after-all. Some are good and peak your interest, while others are destined to collect dust on the shelves of the mind. This season didn't seem to catch a good footing until the last half of it.Episode 10 "This Mortal Coil" was genius! Most Stargate plots are pretty predictable. It's cheap entertainment that requires little thought to digest. However, the episodes that are a puzzle of mystery that keep you twisting until the end, are my favorite. They linger with me always, with the whisper, "THAT WAS AWESOME!". When the credits roll, I'm on the edge of the couch, clapping my hands and giggling like a little boy, I'm not going to write any spoilers but it's a taste of movies like "A Beautiful Mind" or "Sixth Sense". Not in a suspenseful way, rather in a way with twists... as much as it can for a 45 minute episode.Episode 14 "Harmony" was a great McKay episode. The dialogue between McKay and the child princess was classic. The bantering in general between McKay, Shepard, and Harmony was delightful for the entire episode. I wish Harmony would come back regularly to torment McKay. Hilarious.Episode 16 "Trio" was great solely because it was the first Carter episode since she took command. The story was equally about McKay and Keller obviously, since they were trapped together, but SG-1 fans eyes were always on Carter. I was studying every movement and word of hers, searching for that flavor of personality that I adored from her character in her previous command. ... Not that I was necessarily disappointed but... she has grown since she was a Captain or Major following Jack around. This episode showed how much her character has matured, for she is in charge and required to make command decisions. I think Amanda Tapping did a great job translating the responsibility of leadership into her character.Episode 17 "Midway" had the best of everything. We have adventure in the Pegasus galaxy, adventure and suspense at the Midway station, and action adventure in our own back yard at the SGC. And Teal'c was there! Not that I was jumping up and down with Teal'c performance. His hair was throwing me off for one, and then next to Ronan he seems like a geriatric little league player. Geriatric as it turns out is pretty close to the truth. The thing I hated about this episode was we lost the Midway station. Just like that! Gone! We didn't even have it for a year! What a waste of time and resources. It was such a great idea only to be incredible vulnerable against bored script writers.Episodes 18-19 "Kindred 1&2" was merely good to watch because we get Beckett back. It is always nice to see those beloved characters again that was so heart breaking to watch go in the first place. Just like when Doctor Fraiser came back in Season 9, SG-1 episode "Ripple Effect". I missed you Janet.Episode 20 "Last Man" was possibly the most rememberable Atlantis episode to date. When Shepard pries open the outside door of the tower to reveal the desert that has engulfed most of the city - beautifully tragic image. Time travel mixed with alternate reality equals killer episode - always in Stargate. However... the writers do seem to use that formula a little too liberally. The series finale of SG1 - time travel. The 2nd SG1 movie - time travel. SERIOUSLY GUYS, the gate isn't even supposed to do that. One would think being lost in time is an everyday occurrence.

Great Season
I loved this TV show, to bad it had only five seasons, will keep all five and watch them over and over again.

Great season
Stargate Atlantis hits its stride in season 4. One of the better seasons. The actors have their characters developed and solidified and it's fun to go with them on their adventures.Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter) from SG1 joins the cast this year as the leader for the Atlantis expedition, though I never felt she found herself comfortable in the role - or else she well played Carter not fully comfortable in her role as leader (though that was never a plot point). That's too bad, I liked her in SG1 where she was a strong character. Maybe a little more repartee with MacKay would have been fun (and interesting). It may also have been the writing that kept her from shining, as her role as leader of Atlantis never seemed to capture her character, nor let her character develop in that role. It 's that weakness that gives this season a 4 instead of a 5, IMHO.

That's how a DVD box set should be produced.
Regarding the episodes (20 spanned over 5 DVD's) - I believe any fan of the Stargate franchise will be generally pleased, as they keep the good tradition of fine action packed and entertaining episodes, with Wraith, Replicators, some SG-1 crossovers and more.I think one of the things I like best in this franchise is the fine blend of the producers both taking themselves very seriously and very lightly, resulting in superb entertainment. This blend finds it's way both to the episodes and the stories and both to all the extra features available on the box set. There are insightful and at times very funny behind the scenes featurettes.Disc 2 contains 7 minutes of bloopers (for the first time) and each and every disc has some more fine featurettes. All (!) the episodes have commentary tracks that are sometimes very interesting. There are English subtitles for all the episodes AND featurettes AND commentaries(!), with the latter containing also who says what (as usually there's more than one commentator). This is simply great - I wish it was a standard option on other DVD productions - thumbs up!There's also a nice booklet with the summaries of all episodes and special features on all discs, including, for the first time, details of commentators for each episode.Overall superb boxset - highly recommended.

All Change at Atlantis...
Elizabeth Weir departs a hero and Sam Carter assumes command (a good decision as she fits right in as a strong leader and interacts with the cast brilliantly) yet I still belive Elizabeth should've have been rescued after the mid season finale then rehabilitated to being the rightful leader after her first three seasons on the show.It would've made for a great recurring storyline for the the fourth season that hits all the right notes despite the cast changes. The stories, action and character development in the fourth year of this show continue to shine through however making this an equal to SG1 in some ways and making it entirely its own in others.

Stargate Atlantis, S4: This series keeps getting better...
As a big fan of sci-fi, Stargate's SG1, Atlantis and Universe are amongst my favourites. Often, with many tv series', the quality goes down with time...Not the case here. This series is jam packed with good drama, nice character development, good scripts and new ideas. It was also nice to see some familiar faces from the earlier SG1- such as Col. Samantha Carter, and T'elc with the Atlantis gang... I also like the packaging format..the inclusion of a booklet listing the episodes with a brief description is VERY helpful. I just wish the publishers of the Star Trek series' would do the same. I hate having to peep under discs to see which episode is where. It you are new to Stargate Atlantis, you may want to start with Series 1 for background first. The episodes on Series 4 are just as good, if not better.

Brilliant
I was a bit concerned when I realised that Amanda Tapping would be coming into the show especially when we are not used to seeing her without Daniel and the others. But I can honestly say that it was just as good as the other seasons.
