Full of encouragement!
This was a great read. Even though I don't consider myself to be going through any particular difficult trials, I got so much encouragement from this book about being content with whatever God gives me. The way Elisabeth Elliot wrote this book made me feel like I was sitting down for coffee, being mentored by her, every time I picked it up.The main topics are about contentment, acceptance, peace, and learning to trust and be thankful for any situation God gives us, and to remember He is sovereign over every little detail. One of my favorite quotes from this book is: "God never allows anything to happen to us, that isn't also for us."I've already bought an extra copy for a friend, and recommended it to others!

Excellent gift during times of sorrow
I bought this book as a small gift for my mother when my grandmother passed away. I thought it would help her. She told me how much she loved it, and that she in turn purchased a copy for her brother. A few weeks later I realized that maybe I needed to read the book, so I bought another copy. I loved it. It doesn't beat around the bush, or tell you that everything will be "ok", or say that your loved one is "better off". What it DOES do, is help you to think about life moving forward, and how you can accomplish that life with your loved one in your own spirit.I can't say enough about it. Nevermind flowers. The next time you have a close friend who loses someone... this book is an inexpensive yet incredibly thoughtful GIFT.

The Problem of Suffering
Suffering will always be with us. How we should handle suffering, even in the best of times for the most devoted follower of Christ, may not always be clear to us. In "Be Still, My Soul: Embracing God's Purpose and Provision in Suffering" we have a memorable collection of essays from theologians, past and present, sharing their experience and pastoral advice. The authors in this valuable compilation range from John Newton to Corrie Ten Boom, from Augustine to D.A. Carson, each, in his or her own way, sharing an encouraging and comforting message. Editor Nancy Guthrie has done a brilliant job selecting each essay for the book. Reflecting on pain and suffering is something we spend far too little time on today. Suffering will affect your life someday and this work will enlighten as it informs its reader to God's merciful work in trials.

Be Still My Soul
I am a fan of Elisabeth Elliot, and when I saw this I knew that I had to buy it. I am not disappointed. As usual, it is exactly what I need now at this moment in my life. I would highly recommend it. What drew me to this book was the title "Be Still" because that is precisely what I need to learn to do and it reminded me of Psalm 46:10 "Be Still and Know that I am God." This is a compilation of reflections based on living the Christian life. Elisabeth is a gifted Christian writer. It will help you in your personal christian life.

This book is a great read when you are grieving a major loss of a loved one.
This book was very helpful. I read it twice. I had recently lost my younger sister, whom I loved and missed so very much.

Rejoicing in sufferings
Whether one is a Christian or not, we all will pass thru this life with pain and suffering. To the Christian, pain and suffering are not random acts. They are front and center in shaping/transforming us into Christ's likeness. Therefore, we agree with the apostle Paul in rejoicing in pain and suffering for they are producing weighty and lasting glory in God. I highly recommend this book to any authentic Christian (anyone who go against the heal-wealth-prosperity preachers).

I will be handing out many copies!
This was better than I expected! By collecting writings from various great sources, Nancy Guthrie has provided a real gem. I have been a Christian for years and enjoy a deep daily relationship with my Savior, so I thought this book might have some nice ideas to hand to others. Instead, this has been tremendously encouraging to me; I am realizing more and more what a privilege it is to suffer with Christ. I have found THE book to give to believers who are in the midst of pain.

Beautiful writings on suffering
Refreshing assortment of 25 texts from Luther to Sproul - each giving comfort in suffering and each really making me think. I so thoroughly enjoyed each one of them. I've been very blessed by Nancy Guthrie's initiative to put these works in one book as well as her other collection "O Love that will not let me go!". In fact I thought that book was excellent until I got around to this book... that says a lot about both!
