Beautifully Illustrated - Great History Lesson - And more!
We received and read this book last night as a family. It's such a beautifully illustrated book and it was so perfect how the author wove the Patois into the story. I loved for my son to see this language in print and also for us all to learn about the history of Miss. Lou. I definitely recommend this not only for families who have Jamaican heritage, but for all families interested in exposing their children to different languages and cultures, historical figures, female figures in history, etc... Such a great book!

Sheer delight for the individual, the family and the classroom
A Likkle Miss Lou by Nadia L. Hohn is a delightful introduction to Jamaica’s celebrated icon Miss Lou. From the start this biography captures your heart with the images and the rhythm. Its an easy read. It is suitable for the entire family or for a class reading. It effortlessly takes you on an emotional journey. For these reasons you will want to read it over and over again as well as on special occasions.Consider the image of little Louise Bennett playing with words and eating words for breakfast. One of my most favorite lines is “Like a doctor bird’s wings, the words tickled Louise’s ear, and like peanut drops they stuck.”As a matter of fact, I highly recommend this story to those who are teaching the creative arts. It explains the process that a number of writers use. It could be a useful springboard for budding writers worldwide. It also brings diversity to your library.Additionally, Eugenie Fernandes’ colourful illustrations are a perfect blend of the action, the historical and the mythical. As such it is appropriate for this tale. It captures the attention of both the child and the child at heart.I especially appreciate the inclusion of the illustrations and photos that accurately describe the era; the excerpts such as the folksongs; the glossary and the note from the author. All these are useful for those who wish to dive further.Trus’ me when I say you won’t regret adding this to your collection!

Finding the courage to be yourself
The power of finding the courage and self-esteem to be yourself and not be forced into imitating others is a life-changing message this inspirational and brightly illustrated book presents to its readers. I had never heard of this Jamaican poet before and loved getting to know more about this courageous woman, who with help from her family, found others to support and encourage her individuality. The poet's actual poetry is scattered throughout the book, and the unfamiliar language is supported by a glossary and index in the backmatter. I enjoyed the detailed note from the author following the story text as well as the smiling and enthusiastic photo of Coverley herself.

My 9 year old granddaughter is inspired and amazed! She took it to school in her Show & Tell bag, and her teacher read it to the whole class.
