The Spartan cam seems like a huge upgrade in quality from the smaller cameras ...
Having used several varieties of HCO Scoutgaurd cameras in the past we were anxious to try this model out. We run a camera trap project in southern Costa Rica wanted to get some live updates while we were back in the States. The Spartan cam seems like a huge upgrade in quality from the smaller cameras that we have been using. The door has one latch and can be opened with one hand. The batteries go in and come out easily. Set up for basic trail camera use is very simple and well though out.The images that came in were not so great, but contact with the excellent HCO customer support staff led us to an easy-to-install firmware upgrade(Dec 2014). The 8mp pictures came out beautiful with no more washed out effects and nice colors images when proper light was available. If we had any difficulty at all, it was with the wireless set up. The instructions are not entirely clear on how to get to all the screens for uploading the data/cellular network information. On our first camera we had to go through the set-up tool and reset the parameters. This was made especially difficult because we are mac users and the set up tool can only be read on PC. Once we got to a PC in an computer repair place in Costa Rica, things were simple again. On the second camera, I found some buttons that allowed me to enter the same info we had used in the set-up tool on the PC, without having to even deal with a PC. We decided to use a data pan to get emails via the internet instead of through mms.Now that we are back in the US, we get some nice images of what is in front of the cameras. One of the settings allows for image size to be sent via email. We chose less than 100kb as the other size will consume more battery power and data usage.I will continue to update this review for a while as we find out how the Spartan cam holds up through some of the rainstorms and the working time and image count from 12 new lithium batteries. As of now we are very happy this camera.
