College Girl Murders

THE SINISTER MONK RETURNS!!!
Really good looking print of some really good looking German college girls being knocked off one by one! This has the feel of a James Bond movie; gadgets, bizarre deaths, mad scientists and a criminal mastermind. But perhaps it's Bond here who is the copycat, being himself influenced by the father of German Krimis, Dr. Mabuse, Fritz Lang's original Criminal Mastermind who set-up the plot standards for Bondish adventures and these German-made Edgar Wallace thrillers of the early to mid 1960's.The plot of COLLEGE GIRL MURDERS is too outlandish to give any spoilers, yet is an oft repeated scenario, so much so in that the Chief inspector Sir John asks Detective Higgins about a similar past case to which Higgins replies, "...yes, the Sinister Monk.", the title of a previous entry in the series of Wallace Krimis...you REALLY need to see as many of these wonderful films as possible!Just don't take this too seriously. Keep an open mind to the body count and daft humor. This isn't GET SMART by any means but it isn't THE IPCRESS FILE either. It's just a good old fashioned murder mystery loaded with exploitation value. A good time can be had here for fans of Euro-mystery-trash. Great color, great soundtrack, lots of sexy girls in bathing suits, nice locations, abundant fog, dead bodies galore, mindless killings, and a red-hooded whip-brandishing maniac!....What's not to like?

Nice one!
You won't be bored. Nonsensical films such as this are much more endearing when they're delivered with a break-neck pace. (Yeah, I know... Pun intended.) If you like the Cine-cheese style, get this one. It's cheap and a good, action-packed party film.

Beware of Scary Dubbing!
This German horror flick tries its best to frighten in spite of the mediocre plot. Scariest of all is the flat English dubbing throughout this less than ideal film. Unless you can get an original language copy, skip this one altogether.

Sexy german film
I first saw this film as a kid on late night TV. The overlying sexual tension was a real turn on. Plot was silly, but the continuing thread throughout the film was the stupid murders and the dirty old man scenarios. The College Dean's sexy secretary was both erotic and funny at the same time.

If you like MST3K, this is one they missed.
I first saw this movie back in the mid 70's on Screaming Yellow Theater. Thought it was so goofy or campy or both. I think it was the first time I ever screen talked, long before MST3K. If you like that kinda thing, you'll like this movie.

Best in its class! Get it? Class?
If you're curious about the 60s Edgar Wallace crime films but don't know where to start, this one pretty much has it all. If you're not familiar with the sub-genre, but pre-hippie 60s eurocool cinema is your bag, baby-- you'll have a swingin' time.

Poisonous bibles!
Beyond Dario Argento and Mario Bava, perhaps the true father of the giallo is Edgar Wallace. And yes, it’s somewhat strange that a British-born writer — in fact, the same man who wrote the original script for King Kong — would beget a uniquely Italian film genre, but sometimes that’s how it works.Wallace toiled in the army press corps and at London’s Daily Mail, constantly skirting bankruptcy and scandal before he finally became known as the King of the Thrillers. His output was staggering — 170 novels, 18 stage plays, and 957 short stories — with him often dictating his novels just by speaking them aloud as secretaries typed them out. He often worked on three books at once, which was just as well. At one point, he wrote one in four books read in the UK.Basically, Wallace was constantly on the run from loan sharks and bookies, so he churned out novels to keep them away. It wasn’t until long after his death that his name became even more famous overseas.Of course, Wallace’s movies had been adapted for the screen for decades, starting with 1916’s The Man Who Bought London and continuing throughout the 60’s with the forty-seven films in the Edgar Wallace Mysteries series. In 1959, the Danish company Rialto Film made Der Frosch mit der Maske, which started the krimi genre. These films are marked by quick zooms and hidden, yet flamboyant, supervillains. Often, these killers wear a mask and as you watch these films, you can see their influence on the giallo that would come in their wake. Indeed, the very name giallo comes from the garish yellow covers that detective novels by Wallace sported on Italian newsstands. At the point where The College Girl Murders was made, it’s obvious that the films were not adaptions word for word from Wallace, but used his titles or themes to inform new ways of telling his stories. There are mad scientists making gases who are soon killed by a monk wearing a red robe and wielding a whip and another lethal gas weapon that’s hidden inside a Bible. Yes, that’s just in the first few minutes of the film.Jazzy 60’s music? Creeps staring at women from hidden windows in a swimming pool? Frustrated cops trying to put it all together, yet with a red hooded killer always one step ahead? Pits of alligators ready to menace comely young women? Uschi Glas from Seven Blood-Stained Orchids? Ewa Strömberg from Vampyros Lesbos? Yes, this film has all of that and more.

Fun German Krimi
The story opens with a mad scientist guy who has just invented a deadly poisonous gas, but the reward he receives for it is a painful death, and not the money he expected, as he's strangled with a whip by someone in a red monk costume! The convoluted plot and mayhem continues with an unseen master criminal who orchestrates various elaborate deaths with poisonous gas as well as the killer monk. It's up to 2 Scotland Yard detectives (one total idiot and the other a cool charismatic type) to get to the bottom of the mystery...I thought this was a pretty good Krimi (Giallo) and a fun watch too. It's quite a trashy affair, but there's plenty to enjoy here with its funky 60's style and look. You have bright colour cinematography, groovy 60's music, bizarre murders and sexy women including Ushi Glass. There are plenty of twists and of course the killer dressed in the red KKK monk outfit with trusty bull whip. What I didn't like was the detective Sir John who was a total idiot and his incompetence was far more irritating than amusing (I guess he was a deliberate comic relief character but is not funny!). It also becomes slow and a bit dull at times when the pace suddenly lessens. But in all it's silly but enjoyable. A mention has to be made to one guy I recognised here, he who played Slugworth in the 1971 childhood favourite "Willy Wonker and the chocolate factory"!If you enjoyed the film in anyway then you should also check out other better Krimi's like "Dead Eyes of London","Phantom of Soho" and "Strangler of Blackmoore Castle".This DVD release is region 0 and is English dubbed. The picture quality is not great but for sure it's easily watchable.
