Does the centre light up and are the pieces magnetic?

Unfortunately no, the pieces are not magnetic and the middle does not light up. The central green piece comes off to make space for the playing cards. The pieces are plastic and the board unfortunately is not magnetic.

Is this easy to play or are the instructions difficult to follow?

I would say that for someone used to playing board games that the instructions are not difficult to follow but like any game you will need to play it a few times to become familiar with it.
