Unacceptable
I was unsatisfied with my order of the International Door Closers 1855P, with the reseller response (A to Z Door Closers), and with Amazon’s refusal to honor its money back guarantee. To start with, the reseller didn’t actually ship me the model 1855P that I ordered, but instead sent a pieced together a collection of parts that consisted of the 855DU base, an 855DU installation manual, and the hold-open control, presumably from the model 1855P that I ordered. When the dimensions on the installation template didn’t match to the parts and the installation manual specifically stated that this unit has no” No Hold Open" and or "Back check valve”, I contacted the manufacturer (10 days after receiving the unit) and was FAX’d the correct manual for the 1855P. I still didn’t realize that I had the wrong base until I had it fully installed on the wall. Then, when I went looking for the back check valve that is clearly pictured in the 1855P manual but not present on the model I was sent, I realized that I had the wrong base that didn’t include a back check valve.By this time, I was frustrated with the whole unit. There is too much holding pressure on this unit for my door. And, it didn’t have all of the back-check valve features that I had spec’d out. And, I felt cheated that I was sent a base unit for a model that was $16 cheaper than the unit I ordered. When I requested a full return, the reseller first insisted “I personally packed the item for you and there was a hold open arm included in this shipment”. To convince the reseller that I had the wrong unit, I took pictures of everything (the wrong box label, the base with the wrong model number on it, and the instructions that clearly didn’t match the hodge podge of parts). Even after returning the item, A to Z door closers continued to be in denial that they sent the right part “with the hold open valve included” but continued to ignore the other inconsistencies like the back check value vs. the actual instruction manual for the 1855P that I received directly from the manufacturer. At this point, the reseller did commit to allowing me to return the unit, but then told me that they would not refund me the $11.69 shipping charges, and I needed to pay $16 to pay to return their unit to them. I’m sorry, but when you send a customer the wrong model, and the customer contacts you 2 ½ weeks later, I don’t feel like the customer should have to pay $27 in 2-way shipping to return it!I complained to Amazon, but they refused to honor their A-to-Z Guarantee, stating “you did not contact the seller within 14 days of receipt to report the issue”. I explained to Amazon that I did have a time-stamped FAX to show that I did contact the manufacturer in that time window. It happens that the 14-day window would have been Christmas Day. Finishing that installation of a door closer wasn’t my priority until a few days after Christmas, when I finally realized that I had the wrong unit. Shame on you Amazon!I am shocked by both A to Z Door Closer’s and Amazon’s complete inflexibility in resolving this and refunding me the shipping as well. I can’t recommend doing business with either. And, I can’t recommend this unit unless you have gale force winds in your building, because there’s too much closing pressure. If someday the reseller or Amazon decides to make good on the shipping costs, I’ll remove this bad review, but if you’re reading this, then you know I still ended up eating the $27 in return fees for the wrong item.
