Beautiful story.
I brought this in to read aloud to the third grade and they loved it. Good story about perseverance and still some history included. Was their favorite book I read.

A must read!
I chose this book to spend about two weeks with it as a unit. My first and second graders absolutely loved it. I have used it before with fourth graders, but it can easily be adjusted for younger students. It really is an amazing story!

Nice informational story
This book is a little difficult to read because of all of the Alaskan towns, etc. It is a great book to expose students to the Iditarod Race and sled dogs. Good winter book. It talks about courage and determination.

A great book for kids about the Iditarod
I really like the story. The drawings were nice enough. I wish the print quality was better, but otherwise, I think my niece will really like this story as she's learning about the Iditarod in school. Each student gets assigned team that they follow throughout the race. I have some reservations about the Iditarod as a whole in the treatment of the animals. This book will help open the discussion about the dogs and their welfare in the race.

Wonderful illustrations and a realistic story that give the feel ...
Wonderful illustrations and a realistic story that give the feel of the Iditarod race and capture the nature of its canine competitors. The paintings of Mick, the woman musher, look like Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod. Although the book is fiction, the story is very plausible and exciting. I read this to a class of kindergarteners and it held their interest. Read the Author's Note at the end for some interesting info about the rules of the Iditarod.

Great Book!
My grade 2 students absolutely adored this book. They were so quiet and attentive while I was reading to them. They talked about Akiak for weeks after I had read it.
