Excellent for home study
Enjoyed using this book. I'm at GCSE level and this book was good revision as well as challenging because it is written completely in Spanish. I highly recommend it .

Not bad, not great
I went into this from Prado's basic grammar book, and it was my second grammar book. I found it helpful, and I learned a lot I feel coming from the level I was at. I found some mistakes in the answer key - not good enough if this is a second edition and a 30 year old book still in print - it just seems lazy and apathetic. A native speaker also explained a lot of things would never be said. Also, some explanations were hard to grasp, like accents and direct/ indirect objects, that I understood right away after reading another book. With all of the issues, I don't have a huge amount of confidence in it and will need to cover the same subjects again. Sadly, I can't recommend.

Best text I have seen for Intermediate+ learners
I started self-teaching myself Spanish about 4 years ago. Needless to say, I have checked out many books & courses. My favorite audio course is the Learning Spanish Like Crazy series. My favorite grammar book is now this one. My copy of it is so dog-eared, I will soon have to purchase another one... which I want to do anyway because this is a fill-in-the-blank workbook with numerous written exercises & as soon as I have completed it, I plan to get a new one and start over, just to reinforce! As a self-learner, I had a tendency to skip written exercises ... after all, no teacher to turn them into! But ASG (Advanced Spanish Grammar) makes them interesting enough that it keeps my attention (unlike some Verb workbooks that just become way too .. repetitive). But .. what I love most is: this book is written ENTIRELY in SPANISH. That's why it is not for beginners. You have to be able to read enough spanish to understand the explanations (although they do give translations of some words in parenthesis). Also it starts you at the very beginning: nouns. So you wonder ... what? I'm an intermediate-advanced student, this is beneath me. Hang on .. not only will it get more challenging fast but even as they teach you the 'easy' stuff, you will pick up nuances and information that you probably didn't know. I learn something useful in every chapter. Each chapter introduces vocabulary, some of which is new, but always useful & relevant words. Next it highlights a point of grammar, starting with the simple stuff in early chapters, then progressing into more complex areas ending with the dreaded subjunctive (!). By the time you work though each chapter, doing all the exercises (answers in the back) you will have learned a lot of useful words, idioms, phraseology not often found in other books AND you will feel like you have been 'immersed' in Spanish for awhile since you are reading everything entirely in Spanish.Highly recommended, I'll be buying my second copy soon.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Spanish but it's been a while since I've been immersed- this review is very helpful!

Helpful for those who have a fair understanding of spanish already
The workbook is mostly in Spanish and I found it really suited my needs well. I took Spanish throughout high school (which was about 10 yrs ago now) and this was a great refresher and tutorial. The book teaches you a lot of grammar, rules and other things that weren't focused on as much in high school. If you don't have a fair knowledge base of Spanish nouns and very basic grammar, this book may be too advanced for you. The majority of the book consists of questions you can fill in and there is a little helpful repetition from chapter to chapter. Definitely would recommend this to others in my situation.
