A fun read - especially if you've seen the film(s)
The novel Emmanuelle is a little vapid, but fun to read after seeing the soft-core film that came out in 1975. Actually, that first film spawned 6 additional Emmanuelle films in the next 15 years. Imagine a hot-blooded young French girl, who's barely old to vote, coming to Bangkok to join her new husband, who works in the French embassy. All the players in this little story are quite libidinous. After arriving, Emmanuelle proceeds to meet 3-4 women, all of whom she falls in love with, and her husband wants to see her expand her sexual horizons and sleep with some male companions he introduces her to. And the story goes on. It's a quick read, a good page turner. I enjoyed it. Now I'd like to go back and try to find a couple more titles from the Emmanuelle film collection on DVD.

Everyone Needs a Hobby and Emmanuel’s is Sexual Gratification
I totally disagree with the philosophy of this book. If you truly love someone, then you must be psychologically and sexually committed to only that person. It addition, there were several criminal acts committed or planned on including sexual relations with underaged children and the use of narcotic drugs. I enjoyed the descriptions of her having sex with various men and women. I’d recommend the book to people who enjoy reading pornographic literature.

it was okay
I think the movie is better than the book. The book missed a lot of things that were in the movie. It was not as sensual as the movie but it was okay and worth reading

The philosophy of eroticism
The novel begins promisingly with the young Emmanuelle, flying to Bangkok to join her husband, sexually experimenting freely on the trip. Then she meets some very liberated women in the expatriate community in Thailand who challenge her values and prod her to grow as a person and get to know herself better. But then she meets a pompous older man, Mario, who’s quite mysterious but a blowhard on the subject of the philosophy of eroticism. A huge swath of the novel is dominated by his theological explanations and dictats which are unconventional but also somewhat self-contradictory. For example, he claims that time spent on anything but the art of pleasure is wasted but this means that his whole section of the novel explaining his ideas is wasted, no? Anyways, that’s followed by him and Emmanuelle putting his ideas briefly into practice. The novel's mixture of unrestrained and experimental eroticism with dense philosophy is very French and apparently spoke to the times in the 1970s but I don’t think it ages very well.

Pure Classic Erotica At Its Best!
Beautifully written, classy, sexy and stimulating! So much has been written, through the years, about this book and its sequels, as well as "The Story of O", that I wish to mention here, what I find most interesting, is the back-story to its creation...I have read that Emmanuelle Arsan is the pen name of Marayat Bibidh and later known as Marayat Rollet-Andriane, born in Thailand. She was the wife of a French Diplomat, who could possibly be the actual writer of "Emmanuelle". In any case, the story is rumored to be somewhat autobiographical in nature. While no one knows for sure, with absolute certainty, it makes the reading of "Emmanuelle" that much more intriguing!

Somewhat disturbing
At first the book gives what it promises, a lot of arctic moments and very descriptive. But as the story continues theres a lot of mentions of incest and children having sex. Just disgusting. Maybe that type of literature was acceptable at the time the book first was published but NOT ok anymore.

Beautiful first half, second half was a let-down.
The first part of the book was intensely erotic, and the language used was simply beautiful. However, I can't help but agree with other reviewers that the second half was hard to get through. It didn't really seem to wrap anything up, and the 'philosophy' espoused in a condescending manner by one of the main characters seemed pretentious and too try-hard to me.

BEWARE: At best, pornography at its worst, even with children
CHILD PORNOGRAPHY? My comments about that weren't allowed by Amazon guidelines. Yet, this is their guideline on this."Some products containing sexual content and some sex and sensuality products are permitted to be sold on Amazon, and we encourage users to express their opinions about those products. Some sexual content such as nudity and sexually explicit images or descriptions is restricted because audiences within our Community may be sensitive to that content."This novel has at least 4 episodes where children in their young teens participate in sexual acts. I got sick to my stomach when I examined them. Sure, I could've stopped reading this novel, but I'm a researcher-writer, and Emmanuelle was a novel for my project. If it wasn't, and I could throw this book into the recycling bin, I would've done that. But it's an e-book! No pleasure there.Apart from that, there were lyrical and good descriptions of more tolerable events. Unbridled sex -- but no consequences, even for married Emmanuelle. No precautions taken--and no pregnancies and infections. No guilty consciences Oh, but about a 90-page conversation between three over-sexed adults who philosophically justify their actions, even with young boys. Gross - but worse -- BORING!What is my recommendation? Bottomline -- please don't support child pornography. That should be Amazon's take also.

A beautiful piece of erotica.
An erotic novel of the 1960s set in Thailand about the sexual explorations of a young woman. Very explicit. If you want to know the difference between smut and erotica, read this book. I definitely enjoyed it and pondered over it. Small wonder it is considered to be a classic in erotic literature.Beautifully written, it's an evocative novel using autobiographical narrative that portrays the adventures of Emmanuelle who, together with her husband, travels to Bangkok to further her sexual experiences. In my opinion this is a classic piece of erotica.Collect it.

Not impressed
There is only half of the story there, I thought it was the whole unexpurgated story and it is not.
