Beautiful illustrations and writing
The artwork was amazing. I was disappointed that there was personal handwriting on the cover page.

Not actually for kids?
I saw this book years ago and couldnโt wait to have a baby so I could have an excuse to buy it because it was so beautiful. Now I have a son, and I think Thayer i should have just gotten it for myself. Most of the pages are just wall paper patterns that my son was not interested in. They were beautiful but theyre essentially just abstract, repetitive patterns. The story kind of doesnโt go any where, not does it make sense and is pretty boring. My son get so bored with it half way through, so I stopped trying to read it to him. This is more for an adult that is a kid at heart and enjoys aesthetically beautiful books.

We love this book and wish there were more like it
We love this book and wish there were more like it. It is perfect for my kids, ages 6 and 2. It is simple enough for my 6 year old to read with me, and illustrated beautifully which keeps everyone's attention. The story is sweet and magical. It is illustrated in an ink print/wood block fashion and is highly graphical. I just love it and would buy more like it if I could. It's great for an art lover like me to read to her kids. I also LOVE the binding. It is embossed beautifully and seems like it will last a long time. It didn't even come with a cover which I think is great because I always throw those out anyway (as the kids destroy it) and underneath the cover, the book is always so plain and nondescript. Books don't need covers! This one is special inside and out. The execution and design of this book is excellent and I look forward to purchasing more like it to read with my children. This is a fine example of what every childrens book should strive to be like.

A classic children's book
Having read the book and all of the less than five star reviews I have to say that those three people (at the time of writing) are wrong. The book is beautifully printed (sure I would have preferred engraved plates and letter press printing for the text, but that would elevate the book into an art piece and the costs and rarity would both go up. However this book is about as close an approximation of that as is possible. The story was simplistic, but it is a children's book, and they tend towards simplistic. For an alternative have a look at Harold and the purple crayon. Another simple story, beautifully illustrated, but suitable for children and delightful enough for adults. The illustrations are charming with lots of beautiful elements. The text is simple, but works well. It is a wonderful book, which won't take hours to read to children but is beautifully presented. This is the sort of book that could well encourage children to start reading for themselves.

Beautiful
Beautiful book. I think my friend who loves foxes loved it for Christmas. I love giving books as gifts but itโs so much better with the beautiful hard cover. Something magical about it.

Beautiful illustrations and a beautiful story.
This is an absolutely gorgeous book that should definitely be judged by its cover. The illustrations by Coralie Bickford-Smith are strikingly beautiful, and the story itself is touching, heart-warming, and wistful. This books is available in both ebook format, and as a hardcover, and it would make an amazing gift in any format, but the hardcover might be the way to go for this one: illustrations of this quality and caliber do look their best in actual paper-format. Its a book that would work well for kids who are reading by themselves or with some help, and it also makes a lovely book for reading out loud

Gorgeous Art and Sweet Story
I've only recently discovered the art of Coralie Bickford-Smith and I love it! This book is gorgeous. The story is sweet and simple, I think it could be enjoyed by a variety of ages. I hope she continues to write and illustrate more stories.

Either way I highly recommend this gorgeous book about a fox searching for the ...
This is a gorgeous book! It truly is an art piece! This is also a long book. Your child will need a somewhat longer attention span to sit through it - which should be no problem for children 4+ but younger ones- will depend on your child. Either way I highly recommend this gorgeous book about a fox searching for the light of a star.

All Cover and No Substance
Absolutely Beautiful Design with Absolutely No Substance! My 5-year-old daughter and I were left feeling rather MEH at the end of reading this. She said -"The pictures are pretty but I don't get it?" - Neither did I. I agree with one reviewer who commented that it is trying to be 'I Want My hat back' by Jon Klassen, but with no humor. I suppose the story is trying to teach something about change and loss? Going beyond our comfort zone? But it doesn't do so in any meaningful way in my opinion. In the story, the timid Fox has a special relationship with a Star, its only friend, which it follows around the woods until one night the star just disappears. Then everything goes dark, the fox gets depressed and retreats to its hole in the ground. The fox suffers from an eating disorder and binge east bugs in the dark. Then out of desperation, the fox goes searching for the star. It roams the forest asking everyone and everything it can find the whereabouts of the star, to no avail. The fox collapses on the forest floor from depression or exhaustion, having not found the star, and then notices the fallen leaves have spelled out for it to look beyond its own ears. Then the fox "magically" discovers that there is a night sky filled with a bazillion stars all twinkling and mocking the fox to try and find "Its" own special star which is out there somewhere. So now the fox is moving through the forest on an eternal hunt that will never be fulfilled to find its one personal star out of billions. The End. Yeah - Whatever! If you would like a pretty hardcover book to touch and hold, go for it. If you are looking for a meaningful story to connect to with your kids - pass!

The Fox & the Star
A beautiful book, I bought it originally for a friend who's partner had died .. and then I bought it as a gift for myself .. It's just such a beautiful book and the other night I read the whole thing over the phone to a dear friend who was grieving for her husband and feeling inconsolable. It feels like a special and beautiful book to have beside me .. Thank you !

A really special and beautiful book.
This is a really beautiful book. The cover is fabric bound in a dark blue colour with silvery embossed pattern. It is lovely to hold. The illustrations are gorgeous - and the story is wonderful. I just love this book and have bought copies for friends children and have my own copy by my bed. One of my very favourite books.
