reviewer sans pareil
Bayley read the books he reviewed in their original language. Wide sympathies and a clear style. Not to be missed.

These essays on classic literature are a delight to read in addition to being delight in authors mostly unappreciated by readers of 'literary fiction,' whatever that might mean. From Laurence Sterne through Anthony Trollope, Anthony Powell to Robert Musil, Bayley read with sympathy and understanding inviting us to share with him this experience. Best of all he wears in erudition lightly and is never boring.

Bailey's reviews of a great range of literature is deep and probing and always establishes the larger context in which the works were written. A fabulous book, valuable for any reader of great writing. So glad to have discovered it.
