Enjoyable family game!
We played this game as a family (2 parents, 13 year old, and 9 year old) and had a blast, I would highly recommend it! It felt like an actual escape room with the way you look for tiny details and follow clues to solve puzzles and unlock doors, not to mention that it plays out just like an episode of Scooby Doo, which is incredibly fun. It is a teamwork game, so not player vs. player which is great since my kids are normally too competitive against each other and this game required them to work together! My 9 year old LOVED it and my initially reluctant teen was hooked in the first 5 minutes. It is divided into 2 chapters so you can break it up over a couple days, which I suggest because I think it took us around 4 hours total (2 hours each night) to finish the game. The game is very solvable (but not too easy) by older kids & teens, especially since the book provides hints if you get stuck (and you aren't penalized for the first 2 in each room). Because of the amount of reading and comprehension involved, plus some tricky clue solving, I don't think kids under 8 could solve it without a lot of help. As a family group, we found it just the right amount of tricky/fun, and went through smoothly with only a couple hints needed. The sad part is, since the game is about solving puzzles and unmasking a culprit at the end, it is really only playable once. Nothing gets used up or ruined when you play though, so it can easily be gifted or passed on to another family! We're planning to pass it along to neighbors! And looking forward to more games by Coded Chronicles!

Excited for what Coded Chronicles has next!
My girlfriend and I love real life escape rooms and the board game versions as well. We have tried Unlock!, Exit, Deckscape, Escape Room the Game, and others. Coded Chronicles seems to be a very, very good addition to these games and I absolutely cannot wait to play other editions!Coded Chronicles features new concepts that I have not seen in other escape room board games and some classic ones as well. Each character has a separate book that essentially allows them to interact with the setting at different times - tying in a good mix of the humor from the old shows into their hefty dialog which we had to read out loud, and it honestly did not feel like a chore but actually felt like really enjoyable. We played as two players and followed the instructions; we split the characters between the two of us the best we could and rolled with it. The manual promises that one person wouldn't have to hog a character for long and it's true. My girlfriend and I swapped characters in between investigations, it kept both of us engaged and it also felt like nobody was left out. This game not only had the traits of a very-well done escape room board game but also played into the murder mystery/who-dun-it type of scenarios that the Scooby-Doo theme is known for. My girlfriend ultimately loves Murder Mystery board games and agrees that this is a well-done mix of the two!All in all, this game is tough! You get one chance as it is technically a one-time play board game, and there is a lot of deduction and puzzle solving that we as adults even got stuck on so ultimately, I think that the recommended age of 12 and older is correct for this particular game.Coded Chronicles is an excellent new installment into the escape room board game category with the unique character involvement and clue system. Scooby-Doo: Escape from The Haunted Mansion was unique, challenging, engaging, and just plain fun to play. It just works.

Fun, but had 2 problems in my opinion
Nothing here spoils the game, but I do specifically reference sections. I really enjoyed this game - also the Goonies version too (which was better). The big problem I had with this game is that I was able to move on to the master bedroom before opening the door to the maze. I didn't "guess" the maze door... so I was never which code was correct (the order of the digits, that is). But, I did have enough info to open the MBR door... but if you do that you enter too soon (without a necessary character). I watched two live videos of people playing the game and one made the same mistake I did (was able to move on incorrectly) and both groups guessed at the order of the door code to the maze. I did see a "clue" to the card order, but it never really made sense. So, I spent a LOT of time trying to figure out how to do this section correctly (which two online groups, once again failed at) and never did figure it out. So, know this going in and it might help save you from wasting a lot of time like I did. Finally, I disliked the solution. It required you to remember one tiny piece of info from very early on in the game AND there were 2 gigantic red herrings to lead you to a certain person. The game would have been more fun if they hadn't tried to mislead you on purpose.

Beginner: Fun, Hard Enough, Makes Sense
This is my first Escape Room, at home or not. I played with my very understanding spouse. For 25% of the game. My mouth got me into a little trouble though so I flew solo for the remainder.I don’t really see how kids can play this. At least without an adult. Teens, probably. But maybe it’s easier with a group of people, young or old. I kept forgetting the rules and mechanics of things and sometimes there seemed no clue as to how to proceed (without painstakingly exploring every option, something that I didn’t find fun so was loath to do.)All in all, it’s really good fun though and I wish I had played it more purposefully. The truth is once I was abandoned by my co-player the game sat boxed up for months and when I finally got back around to it I rushed to the finish line. So I missed a few things. However, I diligently returned all the pieces from whence they came so I look forward to someday replaying it with as-yet-unmet-board game-people friends.
