A beautifully written story
A very typical story - the kind I got to expect from Laura Esquivel after reading a couple of her books. It's an account of the spiritual journey of Malinche through life. Cyclical and not logical, a very feminine story that I think any men and even women who aren't truly in touch with this part of their nature will struggle with. There are so many poetic descriptions and amazing beautiful insights into the depth of the Soul of the World. Thank you to Laura Esquivel for sharing this amazing piece with the world.

good practice
Great Practice in Spanish reading. Interesting background on the Spanish conquest of Mexico. But a slightly irritating writing style with little variation and too many repetitive lists!

Very interesting part of history, I really enjoyed it!
I found the spiritual descriptions quite hard to understand, but that's because of my Spanish and the fact that I did not know anything about the Aztecs. It is a fantastic story and the character of Malinalli is very engrossing. I learnt a lot about this page of history and the destruction of the Aztec civilisation.

Malinche
The writing is sheer poetry! Great insight into the period of Cortes Malinalli the heroine comes alive in this book! Also a very easy read for one who is not a native speaker of Spanish Laura Esquivel is a great writer! For me her most delightful book remains 'Tan veloz como el deseo'

Huge disappointment
I've read books by Esquivel that are so much better. I couldn't finish this one - I found the writing really disjointed, with huge chunks about Mayan spirituality awkwardly shoehorned into the story. The characters were unrealistic and contradictory, and the book seemed very rushed.
