Emmy and Golden Globe-winner Robert Young ("Crossfire," TV's Marcus Welby, M.D.") is a successful but stuffy Boston businessman. The glimmer of sadness in Young's eyes indicates that his ascension to the top was not without its cost - a man who lived his life as he was told to, not as he would have chosen to. In flashbacks, we see how Young considered changing the track his life was on in order to marry Hedy Lamarr ("Ziegfeld Girl," "Ecstasy"). After marrying his wife, however, the man never strays. The story is told by building the entire narrative on the flashback structure (as in "Citizen Kane") along with utilizing the Strange Interlude approach of interior monologues heard on the soundtrack. Also stars Oscar-winner Van Helfin ("Shane," "Airport"), Oscar-winner Charles Coburn ("Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "The Lady Eve") and Academy Award-nominee Bonita Granville ("Now, Voyager," "The Glass Key"). Directed and written by Academy Award-nominee King Vidor ("Northwest Passage," "War and Peace").

One more great classic
I grew up watching the silent films on Friday nights with my mom; and, she introduced me to all thr classics we now watch on TCM today. I never tire of watching them and I have quite the large selection to choose from! Who needs Cable or streaming when you can save your money by owning and watching such wonderful classics as this movie at your leisure?!

Good Movie, Sadly, the Disc is a DVD-R not a DVD as advertised.
Good Movie, Sadly, the Disc is a DVD-R not a DVD as advertised. In the past, Amazon would indicate if a disc was pressed (DVD) or burned (DVD-R). Except for M-Disc, burned DVDs do not last as long as a pressed disc. This movie is very thought provoking about how life is or how it could have been. Hedy Lamarr gave a good performance here. This film is interesting because it's not just a romance but more of a portrait of a man--the romantic and mundane aspects as well. Not surprisingly, Robert Young does his usual wonderful job in the film. But who really impressed me was Hedy Lamarr. In many other films she made, she just seemed like a very pretty lady and nothing more.Hedy was a scientist first, a movie star second. She was the inventor of frequency hopping as a secure method of communication. This is now incorporated into all iPhones. She was pretty and smart!Very happy to have this movie in my DVD/Blu-ray collection. If this review was helpful, please click on the link below.

Long but very good
Robert Young gives a great performance as a rich young man who has a difficult time escaping his upbringing. Hedy Lamarr is very good in a rare role that plays down her beauty as the city girl who doesn't want to give up what she had to fight to get as a woman in business. There is a great supporting cast with Charles Coburn as Robert Young's father. There are some very profound observations on life and what you expect of your children when they age. It is a long film but keeps your interest along the way. Similar in design to Citizen Kane as a retrosective of one's life but not nearly as cynical. If you are a fan of Robert Young or Hedy Lamarr it is a must see.

Charming! Outstanding performances by the beautiful Heddy Lamar and colleagues.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Somewhat old-fashioned and sentimental, yet still relevant today, because human nature does not really change. We still face tensions between the exigencies of our jobs and our private lives; between tradition and individualism.

Age old lessons in this movie...
This movie is an excellent portrayal of how people view themselves and others around them as they grow and mature. Through the eyes of Robert Young, who is asked to write about what he has accomplished since college for an upcoming reunion, he reminises through flashbacks, whether or not his life has been of value, whether or not he is happy. He reevaluates the people he has met throughout his life and the choices he has made. The most revealing age old fact is that each generation views the next with the same sceptiscism, lack of understanding and sincere believe that the world will not survive. I loved this movie!

masterful and thought-provoking.
An extremely intelligent, immaculately well-written drama, with some ideas that go far deeper than the surface. It looks and feels like a conflict between romantic love and social background, but by the time it's over, it's much, much more. Are we all destined to have a love that is so perfect and so impossible that it is only "wishing" as Ruth Hussey says in the last scene? The casting in this movie is brilliant. Every character is absolutely believable, with the kind of nuances we're used to with real people.

Truly Great picture and story
One of the very few stories based on a love affair that started early in manhood, went no where....and thendecades later, was accidentally reactivated after the man had a wonderful marriage. He saw his first loveand even tho she was still the same gal, he realized he was now and had been in love with the womanhe married. So interesting and true to life. Hedy Lamar was not only his first love, but actually in reallife, she was spy for British Intelligence in Germany during WWII.
