Fun action movie with every trope you can imagine
This movie has it all. Fast action, a natural disaster, Nazis, illegal animal trade, A psychopathic bad guy, a couple of fancy camera techniques (I particularly enjoyed the one where they rolled the camera when they flipped the girl) and a cornucopia of other Hollywood tropes to shove this plot forward. If you are looking for something on the ridiculous-action side, consider this a 4-star. Complete with bad grappling that looks more like dancing. In a world where movies are raising kids (and frequently adults interpret what they see as real) this movie is totally irresponsible. Civil rights violations abound. Almost everything the cops do in this movie is illegal and unrealistic, and not for the purposes of character development but plot device. Pick a bad cop behavior, unlawful detainer, lack of probable cause, coercion, destruction of private property, manslaughter, and these are supposed to be good cops. Don’t even get started on the irresponsible gun handling. Can we please have movies where supposedly competent people know the safe firearms rules. Yes, I know this is a movie, but can we please not have the bad guys use 6 pounds of c4 to breach a door?I could go on for much longer, but I will end with this: in the mid-movie scene (also shown in the preview) where Ray (Mel Gibson) has trouble making a shot to save Officer Cardillo (Hirsch), why didn’t we see Officer Pena (Cayo) take the shot instead? It would have been a boon to the competent female cop image, it would have been an opportunity to for Pena to impress Ray and get that recommendation she was after, it would have been the right gun for the job (she had a rifle), it would have been a stress inducing moment for the audience, it would have cemented the new partnership between the two cops. It was such a missed opportunity.

Some perspective is needed
All the disapproving ratings are valid only if you compare apples to apples. You only need to see the credits to understand why. This a low budget movie. It's also a project from a poor country with a nascent industry. I venture to say that up to 95 % of all people involved in this project are local latinos. That Kate Bosworth and Mel Gibson participated in it says more about their character as people to me. They could have dropped from the project after the first ten days of work if they thought it would detract from their quality as top rated actors. I would like to think they saw it through because they were helping the industry develop and grow in a country that doesn't have an established movie industry like the U.S.. I wouldn't doubt that part of their incentive package included all paid expenses vacation afterwards. This would be comparable to professional baseball players from the U.S. playing with teams in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic during winter, which happens every year since I can remember. They have elevated the quality of baseball in both countries and the U.S. Every one wins from this exchange. Why would the movie industry be any different? Be happy that the movie did not include a musical act with the main characters twirling semi-auto rifles instead of batons to hokey music, like Indian B-rated movies!.Ok! Even that is not comparing apples to apples. These appeal to a different segment of people with different sensibilities. Again. Look at the credits, put on a different set of glasses, and re-assess your judgement. You never know... It might become a silver classic of B-movies a hundred years from now.

classic action flick, like how they used to be, this is a MOVIE
There are films. There is cinema. And then, there are movies. This is a movie. A complete, self-contained story, told in about 90 mins. There is no setup for a sequel. and you don't need to know much else to get into it. all the characters are stereotypes or archetypes. all the plot elements are organized for action movie chaos. the plot is laid out systematically with no element wasted. no extraneous shots that don't add to the pacing. and each plot element is presented in such a way as to draw you into the story without lingering too much on any one element. the dialog is well written for the form and manages to not be cringy and that's despite the obvious cheese (i don't know how they pulled that one off, very impressive). and while i found the plot points predictable, it didn't ruin the movie. much like knowing how your favorite song goes is enjoyable - so is this movie.i noticed that even the "negative" reviews found the action engaging. and that's because its more well made than one realizes at first. this is a comedy action movie with a slightly dark sense of humor. and it plays the comedy straight, instead of winking so we think they're smart film makers. which makes this movie smarter than people are giving credit.i found it refreshing in a media landscape where it seems every video series is so heavy and ponderous with intricate twisting plot points that really don't amount to much once you've waded through the morass of a few seasons.so, invite some friends over some friday night, sit back with a bowl of popcorn, or maybe a freshly delivered slice of pizza and give this movie try.
