Of Benefit to Any Dedicated Yoga Student
Yoga and Multiple Sclerosis is a comprehensive book on Iyengar yoga therapeutics offering specialized yoga instruction for people with MS and their yoga teachers. Very clearly presented and illustrated by senior Iyengar yoga teacher Garth McLean, this book is firmly rooted in his profound personal experience in practicing remedial yoga for his own MS condition, as well as in his dedication to teach students with MS and motor challenges. Four years ago, I started taking Garth’s MS class at a studio in LA, as I needed to work on my mainly structural musculoskeletal conditions. This in-person class was very helpful for me from the start, also because there were several teacher assistants, often credentialled Iyengar yoga teachers themselves, who could assist each student with prop setups and adjustments. My therapeutic yoga practice improved remarkably one year later, when the studios closed due to Covid, and the in-person MS class migrated to Zoom. Then, finding myself homebound and isolated, I had to practice regularly on my own without any hands-on assistance, to maintain function and mobility. Garth also offered private zoom sessions, an opportunity I soon took advantage of. A few months later, he published this book most opportunely, at a time when his students worldwide needed his support more than ever. I was isolated longer than most people, during these Covid years, yet I had the fortune to have the continued virtual support of this dedicated teacher. Because the book reflects his teachings with precision, it has become a constant reference tool in my practice. Through these multiple modalities of therapeutic yoga, I have slowly become more aware of subtle changes in my condition. I have learned to manage pain better and to practice more fluidly, adapting the sequencing of yoga asanas and the positioning of the props to fit the specific needs of the moment. Unique in its reach, this book is an important contribution in the field of yoga therapeutics, which should be translated into as many languages as possible, to inspire and to benefit the greatest number of people. Thank you, Garth. You have made a positive difference in many people’s lives, as well as in mine.
