The Vincent Price Collection [Blu-ray]

This is for the Sept 22 re-release.I've been wanting this for a while. Back when the first release was out, it was more expensive and I was holding out for a lower price. I regretted that decision when it was discontinued, so I resolved to get it as soon as it was available.The movies themselves are really good. Lots of old fashioned gothic horror with old castles, spider webs and atmosphere. And of course, the great Vincent Price himself. He does such a great performance in everything he does, so it's hard to pick out a favorite.Pit and the Pendulum is first where Price plays a dual role of haunted man and sadistic torturer. The Abominable Dr Phibes is probably the one I've seen the most where he's a disfigured musician who takes revenge for his wife's death by murdering her doctors in the most gruesomely inventive ways. And that's just the first disc!Next is The Haunted Palace where again, Price plays a dual role of innocent man and his evil warlock ancestor. Fall of the House of Usher is probably the most melodramatic where Price is the tormented Roderick Usher.Masque of the Red Death is one of the most interesting. Here, Price is a sadistic prince who tries to avoid a plague and gets his just desserts in the end. Probably the most colorful film in the collection. Pure Spectacle.Last is Witchfinder General. Again, Price is the sadistic villain of the title. I haven't watched this yet, but it's sure to be good.The Blu-ray presentations are good. They could have done a little better with cleaning up the specks and scratches, however. There is also a very noticeable tear and some missing frames near the end of the Theatrical version of Masque of the Red Death, but it's possible that it was the best print the studio had to work with. Oddly, this defect is not present in the Extended version. There is a booklet included with the package, but it's for the original release as there are credits for the Vincent Price opening monologues that are no longer with the package.Overall, however, it's very worth the "Price" for "Price". Hopefully this will sell well enough that Shout! Factory will bring back Volume 2.

I've always been a big Vincent Price fan. After viewing these movies, you'll be one, too.

I am a huge Price fan, but it is a genuine pain trying to track down high-quality copies of all of his films—especially when collections like this go out of print and are sold for four times its retail value! I am over the moon to have this is hand. Already, I've watched the first two films on it: House of Usher and Pit and the Pendulum. Both have been excellent quality, more in the visual and audio departments. The piece de resistance on this set, for me, is certainly Phibes; I cannot wait to sit down and watch it as it is not only a seasonal favorite of mine but an all-time favorite as well!My copy arrived with the slipcase slightly torn, but that was not a huge problem. There is a booklet inside with a nice essay about Price which I read before rewatching Usher. It made me realize I ought to read about movies more—it does help "usher" in a lot of additional appreciation for what you are about to cozy up with and watch.Thank you to Shout! Factory for the rerelease, the films' studio, and the Vincent Price estate for letting this be re-released—I hope Volume 2 is next as I missed that one as well. Cheers!

What classic movie fan doesn't like Vincent Price?I'm delighted to see Shout! Factory change their collective mind, and finally re-release this set after letting it go OOP. (I emailed them a year or so ago, and asked if they were going put this back out, and their reply was that they had no such plans.) That left potential buyers at the mercy of online sellers who were asking $300 and up for a New copy.Overall, it appears the transfers were from prints in VG condition, but no attempt was made at restoration. Visual imperfections are mostly minor, but abound.While this set was still OOP with no plans for re-issuing, I found and bought Region-Free Blu-rays from Spain of "The Pit and the Pedulum" and "Fall of the House of Usher" -- the two films that I consider to be the true keepers in this set. These imports' quality is equal to that found on this set.Other Vincent Price movies not to miss include "House of the Seven Gables" and "Dragonwyck". I had to get the latter as a Region-Free French import ("Le Chateau du Dragon"). It was expensive, but the transfer is flawless.4.5 STARS

This collection went OOP for a very long time! I had purchased the 2nd and 3rd collections, but couldn't get the first set. I was extremely happy when Shout Factory rereleased this set! The Blu-Ray transfers look very good! My only disappointment was that "The Masque of the Red Death" froze up on Chapter 10 and kicked back to the main menu. I took the disc out and cleaned it, but the disc still skips. I may have to buy the movie individually, but I shouldn't have to.

These really are the cream of the crop when it comes to Vincent Price’s horror films. Many great stories, based on the work of Edgar Allen Poe. The best, being The Masque of the Red Death. Also included is the awesome The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) which is so much fun. The other cool feature is the titles on the blu rays which feature great artwork. Highly recommend for any Price fan.

I DON'T HAVE THEM IN FRONT OF ME, BUT THEY ARE ALL VINCENT PRICE AND HE BRINGS THE GOOD STORY TO YOU. I HAD NOT HEARD OF OR SEEN THE ABDOMINABLE DR. PHIBES--HE WAS GOOD IN THAT-THE WHOLE STORY WAS DIFFERENT BUT GOOD--EVEN WITH THE 70'S PROPS THEY USED. I'D SUGGEST IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY VINCENT PRICE, GET THIS COLLECTION!

Was waiting 2 years for the Vol. 1 Reissue, worth the wait. Now I have the complete set. Its worth it jut for the insert booklet commentary.

This is a good quality collection of some of the best horror movies that Vincent Price made. One of them I had never even seen before! The package arrived in good time and excellent condition.

Love all of his cult classics to this day! 4thumbs up.
