A Very Enjoyable Read
When Hannah admitted to lying early in the book, I knew we couldn’t trust her. She is an unreliable narrator which makes it hard to tell what parts of her story are true.“A cage is a cage is a cage.”Accused of hurting her best friend and roommate Agnes, Hannah has been locked up for weeks and then months for a simple misunderstanding. She wonders if she will ever be free of her box. She must earn even the smallest privileges, such as leaving her room for lunch, and she’s struggling to earn those privileges. But Hannah is cunning, and she knows how to manipulate people. If she plays the game, she might get out sooner. While I figured out what was going on early on, it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. A few of her days blend into each other, and it feels repetitive. But we see life through her eyes, so it makes sense. I recently became a fan of Sheinmel, and am working my way through her back catalog. I appreciate that she writes about mental illness because we need more books that realistically depict sufferers. A very enjoyable read.

Predictable and Muddy
This book fell very in-between for me, but way more on the 2.5 side than a true three. There are parts of it that I found fascinating and others that completely missed the mark for me. One of the biggest issues I have with this is that I don’t understand if this is supposed to be a poorly paced thriller or a poorly executed look at mental health. Not having a clear understanding of perspective really threw my connection to the book.I’m also unsure if I’m supposed to like Hannah or not. I understand that she is an unreliable narrator, but that doesn’t have to make her unlikeable necessarily. I felt sympathetic for her at times, guessed the diagnosis, and then felt like a lot of what took place was predictable. The rest of the characters also felt extremely clichéd and flat. I wanted to find someone to really enjoy and didn’t.I did, however, find the plot interesting enough to want to get to the end. I felt the “break-throughs” presented were enough to keep Hannah’s story moving forward to come to an okay ending. It would’ve just been more interesting if it hadn’t all felt so predictable.I don’t think I’ll be recommending this to anyone, to be honest. I feel like I’m not sure I gained much after reading it.

What happened next?
I may never know but will wonder for a long time! The way this story was written is one yo be appreciated. Hannah went through so much, I'd like to know the other sides of this though. Maybe different perspectives. So much was toldbut so much more untold. Still great!

Great read
This was really well done. An intimate look at a young girl who is coming to terms with something very difficult and scary. The author does a great job of making us think that certain things are normal, and then encouraging us question those same ideas along with the protagonist. To recognize our own blind spots. One thing that I felt was missing from this novel is some sort of overarching lesson or bit of meaning. I didn't walk away feeling like I had witnessed something that was fully relatable or changed my understanding of the world. Maybe this isn't that sort of book. It was still an entertaining read from beginning to end.

Fascinating Twists?
This was my first Alyssa Sheinmel novel, and I read it in one day: the precise definition of, “I couldn’t put it down.” Never a dull moment or paragraph, the suspense keeps building and building, creeping and creeping, until the grisly truth slowly becomes evident. How would you feel if you were falsely imprisoned in a mental hospital, and accused of a heinous crime you did not commit? (Or did you?) You shouldn’t be punished for what was a terrible accident, right? (Or was it an accident?) Your fellow inmate holds the key to your innocence—if you can sneak her out of the institution. And if she’s real.

Last few pages are missing.......there's 352 pages in the original book....and I've got the book with only 339 pages.......😑😑😑......I buy all my books from Amazon and never expected this kind of product.....highly disappointed.........I usually don't write any reviews...I only give the stars to rate the product....but this time it was really bad.......
