Siberia and Him

Gloomy secret love affair between two Russian men who go on a journey together across the Siberian countryside to check on the welfare of a babushka (sweet old granny) who has not been answering her phone for weeks. Tragedy on the journey back makes for a very sombre ending. Not exactly a feelgood movie, but worth watching to get a perspective on the difficulties faced by those who dare to embark on a same sex relationship in communist Russia.

Highly recommended. This is not your traditional gay-themed movie. Being Russian and gay is a big taboo and the characters are unfortunately bound by this. The journey that they take across the countryside lets us see a very pretty Siberia, but also the implications of this huge Russian stigma.
