can this also charge the batteries when not in use?

There is a HUGE limition here. It will only charge OR power your devices. So if you pluin in power+ it stops powering anything plugged into it. So say plug the power+ into the wall and have a refrigerator plugged into it during a rolling blackout. So the batteries can try to get some charge between blackouts. During that charging time your refrigerator will be without power.

Yes, you can use any number of batteries from 1 to 4. I tested mine with two batteries to run a 1200-watt microwave, and it worked fine. I didn't try it with one battery, and I don't know whether it would have worked. One battery might have limited capability to power a high-wattage appliance. Of course, the more batteries you use, the longer you'll be able to run a given appliance.
