I would go with the amazon size chart. A little more room is better than too tight. The waist drawstring helps to customize the jacket fit. 36"chest fits comfortably in the medium size jacket.

Hello. Since you could be either size I would order the large for layering a sweater underneath. The waist drawstring customizes the fit for flattering wear.
