The doors should not be closed if there is a fire going. The doors are meant to keep heated or cooled air from escaping up the chimney. There is a nice set of heavy wire mesh doors behind the glass ones. They are usually closed when there is a fire. Since these doors are mesh, the heat comes through. I doubt there is a temperature limit on the mesh doors. The glass doors are very reflective. Hope this helps.
