Great all around
Looks nice, has a nice weight to it, performs well, and seems well constructed . I've been using it for a few months now and have pretty much no complaints. It can put out a fair bit of ink if you have some firmness and write slow, but that's with most all fountain pens. The ink cartridge can be a pain to install, but that might also be due to the ink provider I am using and not the pen itself. I would certainly buy this again.

Well balanced
Pen is heavy but well balanced, I was looking at Parker pens but remembered how the plastic casing on bottom half of pen would snap and the reviews for those pens weren't great. This pen was a little more expensive but worth it. It's a well made fully metal pen and writes well.I bought the fine nib which is more like medium, which is what I wanted anyway. The little tin case to keep it in was nice as well.

Found this most difficult to keep control of. Sweaty hands don't help
Another pen consigned to the draw, for presents

Perfect everyday fountain pen
Lovely fine-nib, a perfect everyday fountain pen. I use a fountain pen everyday, some will leak, some won’t keep a steady stream of ink. But this pen has none of those issues. The looks are clean, nice screw top. A perfect pen for everyday life

A well-made pen with a surprisingly smooth nib
Hongdian is a Chinese manufacturer that produces surprisingly good pens. I already have a pen from their Black Forest series so I already had high expectations when I ordered this pen.Made from stainless steel, it's well built with no discernible sharp edges. In fact, when the cap is on, you can barely feel the transition from the cap and the barrel. I would have preferred there to be no finials (the bits at each end) but they are pretty minimal, to be fair. The pocket clip is also shiny and seems to be solid with no movement. There is very little branding on the pen (a huge plus in my opinion), with just a stamp on the side of the cap (see photo) and the logo is embossed at the end of the pocket clip. It's pretty subtle, unlike many pens. The cap screws on rather than clicking into place and once on, feels very secure. There's no tinny rattle as you screw it on or off. There's a decent sized ink converter included in the barrel but you can use international ink cartridges if you don't care for bottled inks but there aren't any included with the pen.The nib is very well made and surprisingly smooth for a pen in this price range. It's not an off-the-shelf cheap nib unit. It appears that Hongdian make their own and it writes smoothly with very little feedback, very much the same as the Black Forest that I already owned. It's good to see that quality control seems to be constant (well, for the two pens I have, anyway). One of my favourite features is the section (the bit you hold just behind the nib). It's also made from stainless steel but the seven engraved rings make it really easy to grip. The minimal brushed metal styling of the section looks great. All in all, I was very impressed with the 517S - it's a great quality pen that performs as well as pens that cost four times as much. I'd say it's ideal for an everyday carry or for business use.The only down side that I can think of is its lack of flair. It not very exciting to look at but that should be readily apparent in the product shots anyway. What really matters is how well it writes and it does that very well indeed.
