Q: can the battery get wet?

No, the batteries should not get wet, that is why the system protects the battery with the transparent plastic cover, but if for some reason you get the battery wet, I recommend that you dry it immediately to prevent its electrical contacts from oxidizing.

Q: how long does the battery last?

The battery won't be an issue. The hose connection will be. Mine lasted about 10 minutes. I replaced it with brass fitting and it blew out the entire housing. I would not recommend this product.
