Heng Long pro tanks are the bomb
My 7th HL rc tank, wonderful machines, highly recommend the upgraded/pro models with metal tracks, gears and drives. Excellent quality for the price. Loads of fun for battles and targets. Detail is also good for the price.

So, a king tiger for under $300 with sound and smoke... from China, good or bad?
Okay, over a decade ago, most RC from China was of the toy variety. You paid a few bucks got something that lasted a week and was ready for the trash. I was surprised to find this HengLong series of tanks (there are several) that seemed to be trying to go after the Tamiya tanks. Well, Tamiya can rest easy in most areas, these tanks don't match the detail or quality of the Japanese line... however, they do come in under a third the cost of such a tank with the same features, in that sense, yeah, there's something for them to worry about. The detail on the tank is good. It comes with plenty of add on bling for the outer shell. The paint job is ok for mass produced. It has sound that is reasonable in quality (you can screw around with the sound set and make this King Tiger sound like an M1 with a turbine!). The smoke generator is included but I had some initial issues with mine, more on this later. It has airsoft AND IR combat capability but you have to set up the IR combat on some models even though it comes with it. The upgraded unit has metal tracks, drive and idler wheels (not road wheels though, but you can buy those separately) metal gears in the drive units (just brushed 380 motors) and the above mentioned features. My unit had some issues out of the box, first thing is that when the styrofoam was slid out of the carboard cover, several black plastic pieces came out with it. These turned out to be the muzzle break for the end of the barrel (see image). It was probably pinched and damaged in shipping. I contacted Toucan Hobby (they included a nice plastic warranty card so contact was easy). They replied to my email very quickly and offered to send a new muzzle right away. By this time I also noticed the smoke generator wasn't working. The blower for it would come on but no smoke. I mentioned this to them and they said I could open the unit to see if anything was wrong.I opened the unit and found the wires atop the generator were bad. One was completely disconnected, the other was very weak. I had to re-solder them. Even after they were re-soldered, the unit did work but it was intermittent and weak. I triple checked the joints but they were good. I think the heater inside may also have been poorly done. I requested a new smoke unit.On opening the top, something to be mindful of, the wires to the main board are very short so open very gently (I did) but in my case the wire leading the headlight still came out and I was unsure of where it went back{it goes in the #4 position). There is a diagram in the manual (the instructions are ok, but not very descriptive or thorough. They are readable so that is a plus, but can be a bit confusing for the uninitiated in working with instructions of this type). I found another one on-line and have included that PDF image in this review if you need it.Operating the unit is easy, but this later model does not follow some on-line video reviews. To fire the airsoft, you need to hold down the machine gun's fire button then press the main gun fire button. This is a safety mechanism but the older instructions were to hold down the main gun fire button and then press 'up' on the barrel elevation stick. That doesn't work with this version, you need to use the two 'fire' buttons. The tank steers well, seems to have trim but mine was well trimmed from the factory. The metal tracks are a bit slick on smooth surfaces but that means you can 'drift' the tank when you get good enough at it.Summary:Tank is worth the money. It fills the void between Toy and Tamiya perfectly. The price is good and the quality is okay.If you do have issues the service is stellar, fast an the emails were from someone that at least wrote English well, I was expecting a lot of translation but I didn't notice anything of that nature at all. Toucan Hobby get's an A+ from me.The unit is a blast to run around with and has held up for a couple of weeks, being run about almost daily. So, reliability seems okay. I've seen reviews to the opposite, but I'd say if you have any issues, contact customer service, they were great for me!Tip: Use a high power USB charger to get the fastest charge on the battery. A cheap low amperage one takes forever to charge the included NiCd 7.2v battery.Warnings: There are videos that show these tanks being used in water... I would avoid that like the plague. There is NO sealing or waterproofing of any elements of this vehicle and trying to do so would be a fools errand. You could, in theory, upgrade to a 12v battery but the tank is clearly meant for scale operation at 7.2v (NiCd) to 7.4v (LiIon) so I would avoid that as well. Also the track pins are fairly weak and can be bent in normal operation. So, don't go crazy in the rough stuff unless you like replacing track pins!

You can upgrade the mechanical parts, you can't upgrade the electronics.
I'm hoping this is a fluke. I bought a T-34/85 a couple years ago that just stopped working. I blamed myself for forgetting to turn the tank off when it still had the battery in it. My bad. Pulled the trigger on a King Tiger last week. Even splurged on the upgrade with metal gearbox and tracks. First fire up, only one exhaust is smoking. This lasts about 2 minutes. Then no matter how much fluid I add or remove, there is no smoke, no smell. I can't even hear the motor pumping (that I thought the 7.0's did away with, yet..it was on this) I figured i could google a fix. Next day, driving it around on concrete. The sounds system just quits. I've tried everything, it's just dead. Too bad as well, It was a phenomenal quality sound system. I want to rave about this thing, if it had worked I would. I'm going to send this thing back and look at a smaller tank. Maybe the metal upgrades on a large frame overtaxed the board. I must say this thing was a beautiful beast of a tank. It konking out on the first two runs was a huge disappointment. I'll post a review on the replacement tank. These things are a heck of a good time.

Disappointed
I can say that the tank is nice looking. I have no idea if it works. I received the tank today as a gift, but to my surprise, there was no power pack battery. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to reach Toucanhobby’s Customer Service for the battery.
