House keys and 83 Series are a match made.
Like all ABUS 83 series, this is an amazing lock for those that want the convenience of using their house key to open their padlocks. These need to be rekeyed before use. That means that they come with a blank key and pinned internally with zero size key pins. They will open with any Schlage SC1 or SC4 blank, zero cut, keys before being rekeyed/repinned. The C keyway is probably the most common Schlage zig zag pattern so it should suit most people’s needs.Repinning the key/bottom pins yourself only requires a #2 Phillip’s screwdriver to remove the cylinder out of the body and a set of key pins (pinning kit) that will match the bitting of your house key. The house key may have a 5 digit or 6 digit number on them. Those are the Schlage pin numbers that fit into each key cut, in order from the handle of the key to the tip. The lower the digit, the shallower the cut and shorter the pin. Higher the digit, deeper the cut, and longer the pin to fill the gap.If your house key doesn’t have codes stamped on it, then you may need a Schlage key gauge to check the depth of each cut which will show you the corresponding pin number that you need. You can also use a caliper to measure the depth of each cut. Schlage has a reference chart on their website. Or just insert your house key into the core and start dropping pins until they sit flush. Just be sure to test it for any grittiness and make sure it’s super smooth before putting it back together.Once you have those, unlock the padlock with the blank key. Then use your Phillips screwdriver down the shackle hole and remove the screw. This will allow the core to drop out of the bottom. There will also be a tiny Z shaped piece that drops out. This goes on the rear of the cylinder. You only need this if you want the padlock to retain the key while unlocked. On the rear of the cylinder, there’s a round detent that prevents the cylinder (bottom of the snowman) from spinning completely around inside the bible (top of snowman). Press it in with your screwdriver and slowly rotate the cylinder until the 5 key pins are exposed in the long cylindrical cutout of the bible. There’s also, 6 holes lined up on the bible but we won’t need to use those. You’ll notice that there’s 5 pins inserted in the cylinder and the 6th pin is empty. If your house key is an SC1 with 5 cuts, you won’t need to use the 6th pin. If your house key is an SC4 with 6 cuts, you can insert a 6th pin to make the padlock more resistant to picking and bumping. That will require an extra pin, a spring, and a thin metal wafer. The wafer is goes into the precut slot on the bible to retain the 6th pin and spring. If you don’t have a wafer, you can tap the single opening on the bible with a #6-32 tap and cap it off with a #6-32x1/8” set screw.Notice how flush the original pins sit within the cylinder. Drop all 5 pins out of the cylindrical opening. Now, replace the blank key with your house key. Then insert the corresponding pins. Check to make sure that all the pins sit flush with the cylinder. Then rotate the cylinder until rear detent pops back out but take care that the pins don’t cross the path of the 6 holes on the bible because they can pop out. Now check that the cylinder turns smoothly. Try removing and inserting the key a few time. It may feel a bit crunchy the first couple of times but that will smooth out.To assemble, if you need the key retained, put that tiny Z bar with the black dot facing up, on the rear of the cylinder. If you don’t want the keys to be retained, place the Z bar with the dot facing down or just remove it completely the insert the cylinder into the body. Reinstall the screw down the shackle hole and test your new lock.Once you get used to this, it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to rekey them. Abus made it very easy to rekey. The 83 series is excellent with a variety of sizes that suits most needs. I wish they made a shrouded, all steel 83/45 though.

No longer German
Once a great product. I have several that have been out in the weather for over a decade. Rough shackle movement out of the box. Exterior finish OK. Overly expensive for chinese. Too soon to tell if aluminum rusts as is typical of chinese.

Rekey this padlock to work with your Schlage house key
Amazon review 11/10/2019 for the ABUS 83AL/40-300 S2 Schlage Rekeyable Padlock Aluminum Body with 1.5-Inch Shackle, Silver Zero-Bitted.To avoid disappointment, please note that this padlock requires re-keying and is not suitable for use without re-keying.If you want a padlock that uses the same key as your typical house keys (Schlage SC1 or SC4), then this is a clever product that can be used. Other variants of this padlock are available for different popular keyways such as Kwikset. Note that this padlock is not compatible with "all" Schlage keys, but the SC1 is the most common one.The special design of this padlock makes re-keying much simpler than re-keying a typical lock cylinder.Do note that to re-key this lock, additional tools and parts are required, not included with the padlock. In particular, you will need to purchase a pack of Schlage lock bottom pins in assorted numbered sizes (I recommend searching for a set that has varying colored pins for all 10 pin sizes as it's easier to keep track that way). If your current Schlage key is stamped with a 5 or 6 digit number, this indicates the lock pin sizes that are needed. However, if your key does not have such numbers, then I recommend purchasing a Schlage key gauge. One inserts the key in a slotted gauge and reads the pin numbers for each of the 5 or 6 pins corresponding to the grooves in the key. Tweezers might also help you manipulate the pins (special tweezers with a grooved tip can be purchased), or just use standard house tweezers or your fingers. For a typical Schlage house lock bought at a big box store, this will be a 5-pin "SC1" key. The other possibility compatible with this padlock is a 6-pin "SC4".Other reviewers have documented the steps for re-keying the lock.If you are just purchasing and re-keying one padlock, then you may find it just as economical to take it to a locksmith for re-keying vs. purchasing the pins and key gauge. However, if you enjoy tinkering a bit and/or have more than one padlock to re-key, it's certainly well within a reasonably handy person's skill to re-key this yourself. This review is just based on initial impressions and not upon multiple seasons of outdoor weathering. Also, for those who want to know, the padlock is manufactured in China.

Be careful
I went to rekey it but I turned too far and it got stuck. Now it would turn at all. It's completely useless at this point. For it to be so easy to render this thing useless tells me that it's poorly designed. I'm giving 3 stars instead of 1 due to my part in it messing up

Great lock, great core, but offers very little destructive security.
Fantastic lock, great features. The Z or S or whatever shaped key retaining piece is brilliant, and not a likely part to break despite it's small size. The machining quality is very good; tight tolerances everywhere it matters, but the core and shackle slide in and out perfectly (nothing is too tight). The core it comes with has a pinning window and a 6th chamber pinning kit, which is all I could ever ask for. Overall a fantastic lock with a single downside: aluminum body soft as a potato. You could cut through this with a butter knife (and some determination). Don't buy this for outdoor/high risk use. This is perfect for gym lockers etc inside a building with cameras nearby, not for securing an unwatched self storage locker with millions of dollars inside.Don't forget to pin this lock, 0-bitted means a blank key will open it. Go buy some schlage pins and some precut keys on amazon and pin it up yourself. I highly recommend pinning the 6th chamber if you can figure that out. Bosnianbill's videos on youtube might help even harry the homeowner out.

Great little lock, made well, and is easy to re-key.
This is a great padlock for those who like to have one key for all their locks. It comes fully pinned as an SC1 5-pin lock with a zero bitted (blank) key. The lock also comes with an extra spring, driver pin, and key pin, for making this lock into 6-pin SC4 lock. Mine came as a key retaining lock, but this can be changed by removing the little z-bar off the tailpiece. All this can be done without special tools. The lock itself would be good for locking up a shed, or locker with nothing in it of importance, or maybe a crappy bike since this isn't the most secure lock in the world. I can rake it open fairly easy, even though it has a bunch of spool pins, single pin pick, not so much, it might be better with the 6th pin installed.

This lock is very good.
So it comes as a 5 pin but can be upgraded to a 6 pin but to add the 6th pin you need to take the core apart. Inside I found 1 barrel serrated and 4 spools. It's about the same size as one of those round combination padlocks making this a perfect lock for lockers. I wouldn't use it to lock my snowblower up but for lockers, it would be great. I am not sure how strong it is physically so I don't know if a bolt cutter can cut it or if a torch can melt the body(check youtube I'm sure you can find that answer). I can only speak to what's inside and how hard it was for me to pick it open. For me, Spools are the hardest pins to pick and overcoming 4 takes a fairly long time.

Great lock, well made
Great lock, well made, and easy to re-key. The lock doesn't require dis-assembly to re-pin, and can be done rather easily by a home user. It comes as a 5-pin model, with the brass plate, and extra driver pin & spring to make it a 6-pin lock. The z-bar makes it very easy to switch between key retaining & non-key retaining. Great quality and much better than the master lock products.
