Great replacement for steel wool and fine grit sandpaper
I used this product today to sand in-between lacquer coats on a table that I'm finishing. I typically would use 320 grit sand paper for this, but the legs have some edges and contours that I didn't want to change. These 360 grit Mirlon pads are soft (feels kind of like an abrasive wool scarf, and is about that thick) and easily conform to whatever you're sanding (much better than sand paper). They are tough, too, much more so than steel wool--after sanding the whole table, the pad was still in one piece with no tears. Steel wool seems to turn to ragged clumps of dryer lint after a few minutes of use. When using fine-grit sand paper, you can often see exactly where pressure was being applied because the dust accumulates and you end up just massaging the work piece with dust. Because these pads have an open mesh structure, the dust tends to move through rather than accumulate. You don't get as much built up heat as with sand paper, it's easier to hold onto, and the bottom line is that the results were a lot nicer than what I would have gotten with sand paper . . . actually, I sanded the table top with paper first, and then after I started using the Mirlon pad on the routed edge, I went back and did the top again. It gave the lacquer such an even matte finish, and it was so easy, I actually enjoyed sanding, which is saying a lot. I'm tempted to buy some of the ultra fine (1500 grit) or micro fine (2000 grit) pads to use after the final coat, instead of 0000 steel wool. One other thing--at about a dollar a pad, this is about half the cost of what I've found these for locally. This is a great new product, and every woodworker should have some of these. I hope that Amazon starts shipping them soon so that I can use Amazon Prime (hint, hint)...
