Not quite Southern style but tastes great
This is a favorite of mine. I do add about 2 TBSP more water than called for, and I let it 'steep' 5-10 mins longer. This is partly because of the pouch type. Getting water in the corners and getting everything mixed up can be a bit of a pain. It's also because I like a softer biscuit. The first time I had these, I was surprised at MH's interpretation of this Southern favorite. It's bits of biscuit in with everything else in the gravy. It's not as peppery as I like, but that's easily remedied. It's also not the usual presentation but it works! Mountain House is our favorite, by far, prepared foods seller. Never any TVP or fillers. They don't use wads of salt and/or citric acid as cheap "flavor". No preservatives or any other crud. As well as being a prepper in general, we live in the mountains. Being snowed in, often w/o power, is fairly normal and this is part of our preparation for it. They have a large range of meals, a decent range of sides and breakfasts, and you can't beat a 25+ yr shelf life. I have a love/hate thing going with MH's pouches. Most stuff we buy is #10 cans, but for BOBs and other times, we stick with pouches. They can be a bit deep for normal utensils, so a bit messy to get your hand in, but you can cut the bag down after it's finished 'cooking' and that helps. The corners of the bags can be a pain, to make sure you get the water in everywhere, but the corners are also what allows the bags to stand on their own. That is *very* handy, especially if you're by yourself, to be able to pour w/o having to hold the bag. For these, I sometimes eat them if my hubs has fallen asleep on the couch before I'm ready to hit the sack. I have a kettle in my office and I just make me up one of these for a midnite snack. Delicious, easy, long shelf life, and a steal for the price.
I was skeptical when my friend offered one of these to me when I said I was thinking about having some Indian food delivered. Gave it a try, and it was easy to prepare. I was blown away, really impressed. Tasted like freshly made. Also really impressed with the (claimed) 30 year shelf life. I ordered a six pack of these and I'm about to order another. It satisfied my craving for those Indian spices. A flavor explosion. However, it doesn't overwhelm. Something to savor. The chicken melts in the mouth. Really surprised there aren't a thousand positive reviews.

A decent entree for home or out exploring
There are lots of civilian MREs and frozen entrees available, but few are healthy, practical, or good tasting. The Mountain House Beef Stroganoff is a decent choice. First, it's freeze dried, so it will store well for years, without refrigeration. Second, it comes in a rectangular pouch that serves as the cooking pot. You just boil some water, pour it into the pouch, and it rehydrates within a few minutes. There's Just the pouch to dispose of, not a big pile of planet-polluting plastic. You can eat it out of the pouch if you want, once it's heated. Let's face it: you can't expect gourmet food out of a pouch that's been lying around in the car trunk for years. But it's got very acceptable flavor and texture. IMHO it's one of the best of the entrees out there, at an acceptable price. All you need is a cup of boiling water and a spork.
