Q: love this item, does it have a top, or do I need to purchase that seperately?

It comes with a foam insert that keeps the throat sealed and cold and still relieves the pressure as LN2 boils off. There's nothing else needed to store LN2 in this container

Q: If using this for culinary purposes, does it need to be washed before first fill?

I am using this dewer for my science class and did not worry about washing it before the first fill. Honestly, if you are using it for culinary purposes wouldn't you normally wash it first? I have made ice cream with this dewer and did not even think about washing it before I used it. Just to be safe I would wash it first. This is a well built dewer flask and has kept the liquid N2 for a long time. Ten liters would last over a week in this flask no problem. You will be happy with this one and it is cheaper than other dewer flasks that cost much more. Hope this helps.

Q: How long will liquid nitrogen store for in this?

It goes fast. I filled it put it in the freezer and it lasted for two days which was as long as I needed it to. But half of it was gone
