Disappointing
I was hoping for an armchair adventure to Hong Kong. Instead I got a book with too many flaws to make it enjoyable. There is excessive whitespace (sorry, I don't care if this was for "artistic effect", I've never seen a photobook with so much whitespace). Worse, there are absolutely no captions, no context to guide the reader....which would have been really helpful in dealing with another of this book's glaring flaws: There are closeups of trombones, pipes/ropes, feet, etc. that could have been from anywhere in the world and in no way convey anything unique about Hong Kong. Furthermore, a total lack of organization made this book impossible to enjoy. Instead of being organized by neighborhood/district or theme/subject, the photos jump from a butcher shop on one page to a mountaintop on the next. In some ways, some of these flaws could be excusable if the price was cheap, but it wasn't. I feel this was a lazy, amateurish effort, especially from a pro who claims to have a penchant for the city. Save your money and simply watch the Hong Kong episode of The Layover with Tony Bourdain on Netflix instead. Not sure how or why it go so many 5-star reviews. I love good coffee table photobooks of cities, key word being good. If you want to see outstanding examples in this category, check out Tokyo Megacity by Donald Richie and Ben Simmons or Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis. Both are informative and beautiful. I was hoping this effort by Alon Garty would be their peer, but it's not even close. It does not deserve a place in my collection or yours. I will keep searching for a good photobook on Hong Kong. If someone has a recommendation, please let me know. This book will be donated to either my local library or local landfill.

a photo guide to the real Hong Kong
I've been living in Hong Kong for 3 years, and have always found it hard to explain to my parents what I love about Hong Kong.Tall buildings, a harbour, mountains; Hong Kong has all these things. But Alon Garty's book captures the real Hong Kong.Bamboo scaffolding, a barbershop down a little allesy, hiking in Sai Wan; this is the real Hong Kong. Now I've bought my parents a copy of this book, and I think they understand me a bit better.

Ewige Liebe
