I don't think it is plastic, it is a very good small hammer, only problem was probably where it was made.

It is hard rubber over steel … very comfortable to work with contoured perfectly to fit ur hand …. I LOVE mine !!!

This hammer is like a regular hammer. It will do a good job with any size nail. I got this hammer because it's easy for me to use and handle and I have more control using it. I really love it, so I bought another one.

Q: Would it be small enough for a 5 year old?

Yes definitely a five year old could use it. We taught our kids to do crafts when they was young and these are perfect
