Viking Art (World of Art)

Sorely needed reference, but details are tiny for artists & others
Fair warning: for the artist looking for reference material to work from, this is a small book, therefore the pictures are small. I had to take a magnifying glass to look at knotwork on many pages. For photos of tiny pieces that don't have detail, like figurines, this isn't a problem. For jewelry and harness pieces, swords and other gear, as well as the image of a stave church the photos are just about a useless jumble without magnification. This is not a fault of the author or photographers, but of the publisher - thus the 4 stars. One of the few books on the topic in English available in the US, so it's sorely needed as a reference if you're seeking to make Viking-inspired artwork or simply interested in the art for a better understanding of Norse literature, culture and mindset. While I still recommend having this book on hand as valuable reference, I've found volumes like the Dover "Viking Designs" by A.G. Smith and Jonas Lau Markussen's "Anatomy of Viking Art" (which teaches how to make such designs from scratch) more helpful for design references to work from.
