Hi it says 3x balls in the description, is that correct 3x balls for £7.93?

It is one ball. I contacted the seller after having only one delivered and they told me it is a mistake with the description. False advertising.

buying for my wife how many balls of wool for a good long scarf . I know nothing about crochet!!

This is very fine wool but beautiful. I would recommend 3 balls will manage a long scarf. I have used two in knitting for the same garment.

Once hand knitted is this wool warm?

Very warm and not scratchy, very fine quality.

Does this wool need to be washed before a knitting job has started?

I have been knitting for over 60 years and I've never washed wool before knitting with it. I'm not sure why you would want to. I haven't bought this brand of merino wool but i have used their pure cashmere and it's lovely. I wash my knitting before I sew it up using Eucalan or a similar product that doesn't need to be rinsed out and then I block it and leave it to dry.
