All the Colors of Christmas

Wonderful Addition to our Christmas books!
Since this year has been absolutely crazy, I think reviewing a Christmas book for children in September sounds not only normal, but very much needed. Matthew Paul Turner has again created a beautiful story about all the good things this holiday season brings, giving us something nostalgic and precious to look forward to as we enter into the Fall season. The book starts with the traditional colors of red and green as they bring up memories of sled rides and decorations of garland. Then, he moves to white and gold, as in the snowfall or star toppers on Christmas trees. He rounds out the colors with brown, like the reindeer (and the skin of baby Jesus) and with the color of You, impressing that we are a vital part to the season, adding our personalities and laughter to the holiday as vibrant as the colors all around us.It’s a cozy book. It’s a book about beauty. And the pictures are gorgeous. The illustrator is Gillian Gamble who did the last book called, When God Made the World.Overall, the book is sweet. I read it to my kiddo the day we got it, and he asked for me to read it again immediately, which makes it a winner in our house. We will definitely open it again closer to Christmas. It will also be a nice reinforcement of colors for our toddler which is another plus. This would be a great book to give at Christmas time, especially for new parents of little ones. The rhyming sequence is different, which threw me off a bit when I first read it outloud. Generally, this author has written in couplets, but this time it was aabba stanzas. It changed the pacing of the book. This was just an observation, not a critique, because the writing still brings you to a beautiful place, even if the pace is slightly different.I recommend any of this author’s books. Each one is a gorgeous journey of hope and beauty and inclusion into God’s story. This particular one would make a great Christmas gift to anyone, but especially the parents of little ones.

Just What I Have Book Searching For
I just received my copy of this book and read it to my 4-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son. I can not say enough about this beautifully written book. Although I was expecting it to have more rhyming elements to it, this book captures the essence and magic of Christmas perfectly. I purchased this book after reading the excerpt from the book description and without reading the reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised that it referenced both Santa and the Baby Jesus. I have been looking for a book just like this one that includes a way of explaining this time of year with the tie-in of both Santa and Baby Jesus to read to my young children..and I have finally found it! I also love the way it also adds the role you, the reader, play in the Christmas Season. I have already recommended this book to a friend--especially for the description and illustrations of the color of Baby Jesus-brown. I think this is such important incorporation because it's hard to find books that show an accurate description of what Jesus' appearance was most likely closest to and I want my children to grow up appreciating the diversity that exists in our world. This is my first book from this author and I will be looking to see what other books he has written.

A Christmas Story for the Next Generation of People of Faith
MPT has done it again pairing sweet rhymes with unbelievable illustrations just perfect to set your family toward a holiday mood. With sweeping, full page journeys on every page taking you literally into the colors of Christmas, children and adults are sure to look at the spirit of Christmas with new eyes. Challenge your family to a holiday color scavenger hunt, searching every day for something new to fit the story and move the celebration onward toward Christmas Day. All the Colors of Christmas is sure to become another MPT success story and a treasured seasonal tradition. In particular, the page with the nativity illustration is inclusive and diverse, representing the faith of a new (and the next) generation. Perhaps most importantly, All the Colors of Christmas invites us, the readers, into the story, reminding us that the Incarnation is not just another inaccessible Bible story, the Incarnation is for us and WE are part of the story! All the Colors of Christmas is a starting place for exploring progressive faith with the smallest of children and is sure to stir the heart of every adult as well. Glad I added All the Colors of Christmas to my family's holiday book shelf and look forward to reading it every year for many years to come!

Beautifully and uniquely connects all of us to the Christmas story
I’m a first-grade teacher for a class of racially-diverse students. I was so excited when I received this book and immediately showed my students’ parents. They loved it and ordered it right away. While diversity is important to us, the message and the way our children’s books engage their imaginations matters even more to us. All the Colors of Christmas excels in each of these ways. It starts off with the obvious Christmas colors and traditions and then goes deeper and deeper. The ending should ignite meaningful conversation about the way each of us uniquely connects with Christmas. After the parents get to first share this story with their kids, I will bring it out to reread in class. The clever rhymes beg for multiple times through. I’m positive we’ll also be drawing our own versions of Jillian Gambles’ delightful, detailed illustrations. Along with my favorite advent book (Unwrapping the Greatest Gift), All the Colors of Christmas is going to be a key text for our December studies.
