Simple and helpful

This book is the most state of the art in books of the breed; concise with plenty of food for thought as well as vital info. Magnificent content. Less photos and 100 times more info-the way a care book should be.

[Review for paperback copy.] I bought a few books on tortoises recently. I've had my horsefield for just about a year now. Got him when he was three from a previous owner, and while I had the information I got from him, a few non-specific tortoise books and some advice from a local reptile store, there were always certain specific questions that I couldn't get answers for and the internet tends to have conflicting information, even between Russian Tortoise sites and forums.That's where this book comes in. Like I said, I bought a few different ones, figuring that in future I'd hunt down the info I needed if necessary, comparing what each said about specific topics, and while the others present the same info and do it in a very stylish design, I find myself combing through airy-fairy commentary, with no actual value, before I find any real information.This book is different. The writing style is easy. The book is well laid out. Sections are easily navigated for information needed but, more than that, the information provided is clear, concise and immediately useful.Example 1: online or in other books I usually find writers unwilling to take a stand on certain foods. Even a site which breaks down the level of toxicity of foods for tortoises was not specific to any one breed and often came with the proviso "if your tortoise is the right breed". So, one of the first things I went to was the food section, which was wonderfully organised into a list of (a) leaves, weeds & flowers, (b) grasses, (c) grocery store vegetables, & (d) fruits, with an exhaustive table on toxic plants.Example 2: the book also went into something I had not considered before, ambient heat vs surface heat. Since I use heating bulbs, this applied to me and my tort, and the book gave information and examples. Unlike other sources, I came away with a clear understanding. "A Russian tortoise may sit comfortably on a rock with a surface temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) or more, but if kept in a cage with 100-degree ambient temperatures, it will likely die." Clear information, well explained, straight-forward, and presented in a way that gives the reader a definite understanding. And for a first-time owner that is incredibly helpful.This book also recommended a non-contact laser thermometer and, after reading the information the author gave, I have since purchased one, which has been no-end of helpful in regulating the vivarium temp especially as the days are getting colder now.In short, I'd recommend the crap out of this book because I have already learned a lot from it and I know that every time I go back to it, I will find what I need in short order, without having to wade through paragraph upon paragraph of useless text, afraid that I'll miss some nugget of info. Here, it's all clearly laid out, is easily read and easily referenced again, and detailed.

I am a newbie Tortoise owner so I am trying to learn everything asap. I am halfway through the book and it is really good. You can find what to need to know quickly even if you have not read the whole book. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Good read if u have a Russian tortoise
