Waiting For The Barbarians

Spoiler.-This is literature converted to cinema.-The Barbarians ARE coming.-This one takes a bit of insight and thinking. A bit of understanding of colonial warfare, cause and effect, and military history gives one a very different perspective.-It's not going to be a popular movie, but it's a fascinating portrayal of perceptive reality. This movie is not what the low information types are thinking-a simple condemnation of brutal colonialism, torture, and that causing the problems, that's a trite view from shallow minds.-This movie is deeper than that.-The Magistrate is about complacency, delusions and having settled, his perspective has him blinded to his role and what's going on around him.Yes, He's so deluded, his views have shaped is reality and his rose colored lens of how he views the threat on the frontier.It's mentioned that he's the only one, the only frontier commander who hasn't cooperated fully, who sees it differently. He's engaged in his studies of the past culture. He doesn't realize how the woman he thinks he's a savior of, views him. Listen very carefully to the reports on his conduct. They are spot on.-The other characters, the public, his own soldiers, the Police Colonel, even the Barbarians themselves see the Magistrate as a FOOL and they all act accordingly.-The Woman. She's blind but she can see. She understands her people's enemy, people like the Colonel. She can hate them. The HATE for the Colonizers ALREADY exists. It's the Magistrate who she is disturbed by. He's so deluded he even believes she may choose to come back with him. Her character give the viewer the contrast between a nearly blind woman who can see, and a Man who can literally see, but is blind to the circumstances that truly exist.-The Guide. (the first young tortured male prisoner) Something as apparent as a WOUND that won't heal on a suspected enemy is missed by the Magistrate. Wounds are one of the surest signs of a possible enemy among a population. The guide recognizes the Magistrate is a fool. He understands his role. He understands the Colonel. When the Magistrate asks why the young man 'lied' about gathering arms, the young Barbarian give him a look of disbelief at how out of touch the Magistrate is. There's a bit of good acting with the 'Barbarians' who view him as a feckless fool after initial astonishment when they realize he doesn't recognize the animosity.-The Colonel's character is portrayed to perfection by Johnny Depp. He's already at war, in a brutal war and he's viewing the Magistrate with the same clarity of the others, but he's got the additional pressures of realizing how critical the situation is, and how the Magistrate is NOT fulfilling his duties because of his delusions.-The Barbarians are building up. You don't build up a horde that can take on a more sophisticated military force, without building up arms, and the motivation is there prior to the questioning. When he runs across the Barbarians, at their leisure, they're depicted as cagey, effective irregular cavalry who can easily take out the small patrol, after screening and luring them with tactics. These are not the peaceful nomads that the Magistrate believes them to be. Even he admits their language is cryptic, deceptive. One can read it in different ways, with different meaning. That involves some sophistication and strategy. The leader of that group of Barbarians essentially is telling the Magistrate he's a fool so they're going to give him a pass.-The entire fact that the Magistrate is simply discounted, dismissed, rather than face court martial and formal proceedings is telling. The authorities obviously considered him incapable. He's made absurd, he's disgraced and humiliated before the public so that they and the military see he's no longer an authority and their System has recognized his faults. He's not held accountable after they ascertain the man is not a deliberate traitor, but is actually, a fool.-In a different role, in a different era, a man like him talked about 'peace in our time'.

If you want a good old fashion shoot 'em up, European Colonial Army against native savages movie like Gunga Din, Beau Geste or Zulu then this is definately not your movie. Instead this is a highly thoughtful and well acted indictement of the European colonial enterprise that brutalized old fading kindoms and unorganized tribal realms around the world. It could be Veracruz 1862, Adwa 1896, Dublin 1916, Singapore 1942, Bien Dem Phu 1954 or even Saigon 1975. But the genius of the movie is in not making it an actual event, actual place or identifiable colonial power, thus the movie becomes intuitively precient and universal. Kudos to the acting performance of both Mark Rylance as the cool-headed, professional colonial oupost aminstrator and that of Johnny Depp as the self-righteous, Inspector Javier-like gendarme/secret agent instigator.

It's not pleasurable. It's not entertaining. It's not cathartic. The storyline is shorter than an elevator pitch. There is no excitement. No romance. No journey. No resolution.It's painterly. You could watch it muted and stare at the ocean of pixels without moving for the entire running time.It's sound painted. You could listen only between dialogue and be saturated.The spoken restraint is so pervasive that the single loud, angry shout shocks.The magistrate is not the protagonist. The colonel is not the antagonist. The barbarian woman is not the victim. The frontier is as fully drafted character as any of them.No backstory, no part 2, no merchandise tie-in, no compromises. (Of course there were, but not perceptible to the viewer.)This is an awful movie in the sense of filling with awe.I'm going to go throw up now and watch it again.

I feel tricked by the preview. Let me break this movie down. Some culture (British? Who knows) have these "frontier towns" in the desert. The one that is the focus of this movie is run by a totally naive goody two shoes. Johnny Depp's character is like a weird mix of the mad hatter and Hans Landa, he comes to town one day and starts torturing the "barbarians" because I guess they want to start a war, it's awkward. Then the leader dude finds a barbarian woman in the streets and immediately fawns all over her and I guess falls in love with her immediately and just expects her to reciprocate. She says she wants to go home so leader dude risks his life and the lives of a couple of his men to return her. When he gets back, Johnny Depp's character and the military take over ther town and they are all mean now and I guess there's going to be a war now which probably will just be the military people killing the barbarians. Im actually not finished watching this but I think I'm about to go to sleep and never resume. So let me know if it gets interesting in the last 15 minutes.

Stark character driven story about a kind magistrate in a small desert village whose life is interrupted by a vicious, accusatory, and suspicious colonel (Johnny Depp) sent to assess the work of the magistrate. The colonel tortures an innocent jailed person. There will be consequences. Beware of the Barbarians.

was really cool to see a period piece about colonialism, the nation might be made up but events like it im certain have played out numerous times in the last couple thousand years, cool stuff but it is not a movie for those who want quick pay offs and squeaky clean fulfillment.I hope they make more movies like this, maybe a bit more fleshed out but along the same vain of period pieces,

Amazing performances by all three of the A-listers. The movie is intense and disturbing. The storyline is a timeless and relevant drama piece. Highly recommend.

Es hat über 3 Stunden gedauert, den Film bis zum Ende zu sehen, denn da der Film unbeschreiblich langweilig ist, bin ich zwischendurch ein paar mal eingeschlafen und musste immer wieder zurückspulen. Aber selbst wenn man es schafft, sich den Film ganz ohne spontane Nickerchen anzusehen, leuchtet nicht ganz ein, wie der Film 109 Minuten dauern kann, denn es passiert einfach nichts. Also ich meine nicht, es passiert nicht viel, ich meine, es passiert wirklich gar nichts. Mir fällt es schwer Revue passieren zu lassen, worum sich die Handlung überhaupt gedreht hat. Klar, der Film will moralisch sein, gesellschaftliche Missstände aufzeigen, der Gesellschaft einen Spiegel vorhalten und dabei unheimlich künstlerisch sein, deshalb gibt es offensichtlich auch so viele 5 Sterne Rezensionen, weil die Rezensoren als eloquent, künstlerisch anspruchsvoll, gebildet und gesellschaftskritisch gesehen werden wollen, aber unterm Strich ist der Film trotzdem nur langweilig, langatmig und nichtssagend. Mark Rylance ist dabei noch der bessere Darsteller und spielt ganz ok im Rahmen der sehr dünnen Handlung, zu den anderen beiden fallen mir nur zwei Dinge ein: zum einen wurde mir wieder deutlich, was für ein schlechter Schauspieler Robert Pattinson ist und nein, den kommenden Batman sehe ich mir deshalb keinesfalls an und zum anderen schade um Johnny Depp, wenn man bedenkt, dass dies vielleicht sein letzter Film war. Mit sowas als Schauspieler in den Ruhestand zu gehen ist bitter.

Eines mal direkt vorweg: Wer Action will und auf einen spannenden Kinoabend voller Nervenkitzel hofft, wird mit diesem Film nicht glücklich werden.Dieser Film lebt von seiner Atmosphäre und dem tieferen Sinn, der sich hinter dieser an manchen Stellen schon ein wenig abstrakten Geschichte verbirgt, er ist intensiv und liefert einem viele starke Bilder, die im Gedächtnis bleiben. "Waiting for the Barbarians" findet ohne viel zeitlichen Kontext statt, es wird wenig spezifiziert, was auch überflüssig wäre - es geht hier um universelle Fragen menschlichen Zusammenlebens, die damals wie heute ständig neu ausgehandelt werden müssen. Es ist ein (hochkarätig besetzer) Indie-Film, der sich aber eben betont nicht an die gängige Hollywood-Filmformel hält.Mark Rylance macht seine Sache hier großartig, Robert Pattinson (nur in einer kleinen Nebenrolle) wie gewohnt gut. Ich fand es außerdem wirklich schön, Johnny Depp mal wieder in einer eher "ernsteren" Rolle (hier als sadistischer Colonel) zu sehen. Toller Schauspieler.Mein Kritikpunkt an der ganzen Sache ist, dass der Film einige Chancen verschenkt:- Die Reise mit dem Mädchen in die Wüste wird zu sehr ausgedehnt und führt (rein dramaturgisch) eigentlich ins Nichts. Interessant wäre eine "intensivere" Begegnung mit den "Barbaren" gewesen.- Johnny Depp's Colonel Joll ist für meinen Geschmack viel zu selten im Bild. Die Figur ist faszinierend und wirft viele Fragen auf (was hat ihn zu dem werden lassen, was er ist? Trauma? Vergangenheit mit den "Barbaren" etc.?) von denen leider keine beantwortet wird.Ich gebe trotzdem 5 Sterne, weil der Film mich persönlich erreicht hat und mir in all dem Wust aus Bildern, die Hollywood wie am Fließband produziert, als etwas Einzigartiges und Besonderes im Kopf geblieben ist - und ich denke, dass das wahrscheinlich das Ziel der Macher war.

Es handelt sich um eine Romanverfilmung des südafrikanischen Literaturnobelpreisträgers J. M. Coetzee, der zum Film auch das Drehbuch geschrieben hat. Insofern dürfte die Verfilmung autorisiert sein.Ein einsames Fort in einer (nordafrikanischen?) Wüste wird vom Magistrat (Mark Rylance) befehligt. Dieser verhält sich gegenüber der einheimischen Bevölkerung fair. Teilweise weist das Fort Ähnlichkeiten mit entsprechenden Einrichtungen in diversen Western auf. Von der Zentralregierung wird Colonel Joll (J. Depp) zu einer Inspektion in das Fort geschickt. Gleichzeitig soll er von dort aus eine Strafexpedition gegen die Barbaren starten, die jedoch misslingt. Die Zentralregierung wird visuell als ein faschistisches Regime dargestellt, wobei man gegen die einheimische Bevölkerung mit großer Brutalität vorgeht. Der Magistrat kommt dabei in Gewissensnöte, da er solche Praktiken nicht unterstützt. Letztendlich wird er selbst vom Regime abgesetzt, gefoltert und gedemütigt und kehrt als gebrochener Mann in das mittlerweile ziemlich verlassene Fort zurück. Dort erwartet er dann den Angriff von den einheimischen Stämmen.Die Handlung des Films verläuft in sehr ruhigen Bahnen, Schauwerte bieten da eher die ausgedehnten Landschaftsaufnahmen.

Der Film basiert auf den gleichnamigen Roman von J. M. Coetzee aus dem Jahr 1980. Er handelt von einem Empire, dessen Zentrum einige Tagesreisen entfernt ist. Ort und Zeit sind nicht näher bestimmt. Der Bekleidung und der Lebensart nach zu urteilen könnte es sich um das 19. Jahrhundert handeln. Da es das beschriebene Reich allerdings auch nicht gibt kann man es entweder als Kunstform nehmen, als Parallelwelt oder als dystopische Zukunft, whatever. Die Uniformen ähneln der der französischen Fremdenlegion, die blauen hingegen mit der Kopfbedeckung stark an diejenigen der KuK-Monarchie vor Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges. Dahingehend ist auch der Vielvölkerstaat zu sehen. Von der Zentralnation kriegen wir nur mit, das man dort mittlerweile Brillen trägt wie der Colonel um vor dem strahlenden Sonnenlicht zu schützen. Da es sich um ein Empire handelt, wird es einen Kaiser geben. Die Denke ist jedoch mangels irgendwelcher Anzeichen für den Kaiser totalitär angehaucht. Es gibt Militär, normale Soldatendienstgrade wie aber auch der Magistrat haben sich einer Staatspolizei unterzuordnen. Irgendwann scheint das Reich sich ausgebreitet zu haben, die eroberten Grenzgebiete mit "Barbaren" bzw. Nomadenvölker, die teils sesshaft geworden sind, sind mit befestigten Forts abgesteckt, die erste Grenze für etwaige Konflikte.Jede Generation greift eine Hysterie um sich in der Zentralnation, dass die Barbaren kommen und das Reich angreifen können. Der Magistrat (Mark Rylance) ist dagegen immun. Der hat sich hier eingelebt, fühlt sich zu Hause, mischt sich unter die Einheimischen. In der Freizeit führt er archäologische Ausgrabungen durch. Er ist ein sanfter Mann und für den Eierschauklerposten im Nirgendwo wie geeignet - und damit eigentlich genau der Falsche für das Reich. Für die Hysterie entsendet man Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp), hochrangiger Polizeioberst der Staatspolizei, geschniegelt, gebügelt, wortkarg und effizient in seinem Metier, die "Wahrheit" ans Licht zu bringen. Was nichts anderes heißt, als Leute zu quälen, zu foltern. Nachdem er mit Quälen fertig ist, reist er wieder ab und überlässt dem Magistraten das Feld. Hinsichtlich des aufgebauten Vertrauens hinterlässt der ein Trümmerfeld. Denn die Einheimischen dachten zunächst, die kommen - und gehen wieder - freiwillig. Doch angesichts der Handhabung mit Gefangenen könnte es sein, dass er damit erst den Stein ins Rollen gebracht hat. Der Magistrat hört erst mal Monate lang nix und findet ein "Mädchen", das er pflegt. Es ist blind und ihm wurden die Füße gebrochen - von der Staatspolizeilichen Vernehmung. Den Vater hat man zusehen lassen...Der Film plätschert vor sich hin und ist ansonsten auch sehr ruhig. Wer Action erwartet, ist hier falsch, was allerdings auch Schuld am Cover ist. Hier wird angesichts der Uniformen und der Zusammenstellung auf dem Cover eine Art Kolonialkriegsfilm erwartet. Das kann der Film nicht leisten.Die Frage ist, was er überhaupt beabsichtigt zu erzählen? Das unmenschliche Gebaren einer Kolonialmacht? Die Angst vor dem Fremden? Kommunikationsprobleme? Das wird allerdings so unglaublich eintönig aufgezogen, dass man sich oft fragt: Kommt da was? Denn der Posten ist tatsächlich am Anus der Welt. Da passiert nix, es ist alles voller Sand und wenige Personen. Aufwändig ist der Film keinesfalls. Ein wenig Geld hat man in die Phantasieuniformen und Stars gesteckt, dann wars das auch.Folter selbst wird nicht dargestellt, sondern die schrecklichen Ergebnisse. Gefechte sieht man ebenfalls nicht. Nur Teile des Ergebnisses. Tragischerweise kommt im Roman im Gegensatz zur filmischen Andeutung keine kämpferische Auseinandersetzung vor, sondern man lässt die Soldaten krepieren, die auf Strafexkursion sind. Hier scheint es aber ein recht brutales Gefecht gegeben zu haben und das Ergebnis, ein einzelner barbarisch zugerichteter Soldat, gibt - deswegen tragischerweise - der Hysterie eigentlich Recht wie es das Ende auch andeutet. Die hysterische Angst vor dem Fremden somit auch gerechtfertigt erscheint, gegebenenfalls aber auch durch das eigene Handeln ausgelöst. Pattinson gibt hier überraschenderweise auch sehr gut einen Sadisten und kann sich glücklicherweise von seiner Schmalz-Rolle, die ihn bekannt (und berüchtigt) gemacht hat, lösen. Trotz geschätzter ruhiger Erzählweise weiß man nicht so recht, was die Charaktere antreibt, sie bleiben farblos.
