Solid portrait of three poor women
Gertrude Stein's words are simple but strong. Her solid strokes makes the fullest of the stories of the labor women she's "painting". A life behind each writing.

Captivating
Her use of language in describing a person, a scene or a place is very detailed. You can almost see it !

Only for the book-lover
A complex collection of three stories about women all living in a fictional American town during the segregation era. Melanctha is by far the best of the three short stories, and can be considered a novella. The Good Anna is extremely humorous. I don't think many can appreciate the innovative technique Stein uses, but a great read if you are interested in the Lost Generation.

avoiding details
I do not like Steins style of writing. She avoids details and she gets in her own writing too much. It's like she has made a decision about the individual so that the reader can't decide for himself.prockett
