I see a cord from the mother in the pic of it being used. Is that cord necessary? Will it run with just the batteries?

Yes...it will run on just batteries, but it will slow as they wear down and I found the batteries did not last very long (12 hours or so). To replace the batteries, the whole thing has to be taken down if screwed into a ceiling or doorway since the entry of them is on the flat side of the device.

I bought this with my disco ball a few years back ans have lost the hook that attaches to the ceiling. Is there any way i could buy a replacement hook

I use a simple teacup/j-hook. I've also just used a zip-tie to hand it from something.
