Batwoman: The Complete First Season (DVD)

Not a very good start, still not very good.
Let me preface all of this review by saying that I am an avid comic book reader and LOVE Rebirth Detective Comics Batwoman. She is one of the best characters in that story. I watch the other CW Arrowverse shows and have seen every comic book movie that I can get my hands on. I’d like to think I have pretty decent taste when it comes to comics and comic based media. So this episode definitely wasn’t as bad as the the trailer made it seem like it was going to be. That being said, this was still a bad first impression. Here is a list of gripes.•Ruby Rose doesn’t seem to fit the character, she isn’t terrible. She is just unbelievable. It takes great difficulty to even remotely believe she could do most of the things she does in the pilot. Her frame is too small to fight guys two times her size and win.•The screenplay was not very good, even by arrowverse standards.•The fight scenes are not choreographed very well.•The plot is your typical super hero origin and really doesn’t deviate from the norm. Nothing makes this story jump out as being original or creative.•Her reason for traveling the world to gain her fighting/survival training doesn’t make sense. She says she is doing it to join The Crows, a security contracting company, but none of the other candidates have done this. Most of them are Green Berets and Navy Seals. They all received their training in standard military facilities. Not from randoms all over the world.•The Crows are supposed to be cutting edge special forces security but they seem fairly inept. At one point Kate beats them to the villain and even spends a decent amount of time with the villain(ten to thirty minutes in show, she was knocked out and the villain had a monologue) and the crows still show up way after the villain has left. They even comment that they (bad guys) are long gone by the time they arrive.•Sophie, as far as we know, has no military experience other than academy training. Yet she is a member of The Crows, an organization that by the shows admission is filled with Green Berets and Navy Seals. She is not special forces but everyone else seems to be. Her character being apart of this group doesn’t make much sense, given her lack of expertise.•Batsuit looks like it was made for a woman way before being tailored to fit Kate in the show.•Lastly the plot has no stakes at all, I was never afraid for any of the characters and never did I genuinely believe that they were in any danger.Hopefully this show gets better because there is still lots of potential. This is a story that has never been told before on screen. The best thing that the writers can do is to get away from the politics and the regular super hero stuff and pave a new path. Kate Kane has an intriguing story and character arc but the writers are pushing her down the same path as every hero. If this show can adapt and do something different I foresee great things. Sadly, I do not believe this will happen.Episode Two is JUST as bad. More wooden acting and unrealistic characters. The dialogue is awful and inconsistent as well.

Not what I expected; not like the Batman legacy I know; way too political!
I am a long-time Batman fan, and not just of Batman, the character, but of all of its offshoots and versions and characters, from Harley Quinn to the Joker, to Batgirl, to Catwoman, etc. But this series, Batwoman, is the first offshoot I didn't like. And I dislike it so much, that even though I paid for the whole series, I won't finish watching it - also a first for me. Why? Because it is trying way too hard to be "woke", way too hard to be political. If the plot and the acting was stellar, maybe I'd overlook all that, but the fact is that even at its best, it is mediocre in its acting, in its action scenes, and it has holes in the script. Summing that, along with its in-your-face woke-ness, I'd give it a less that 1 out of 5 rating if I could.

Too good for the Arrowverse
That was SO much better than I was expecting. the music was great, the acting was a tier too good for the CW, and it was loaded with batwoman / batman Easter eggs. noticed Zorro on the movie screens? Or Rachel Maddow, who wrote the foreword to the best Batwoman graphic novel to date, voicing a journalist?Ruby Rose was the perfect casting choice. and they pull no punches with the Alice plot arc - this is not a show with a slow buildup to a shocking reveal. I just hope they can keep this momentum going for a season.

Really excited to watch the rest of the season!
So, I didn't realize they were doing this until I saw a Jimmy Fallon interview with Ruby Rose, and she casually mentions that she does her own stunts, and that she almost became paralyzed due to an injury sustained while doing a stunt. And after she recovered, she went back to doing stunts as Batwoman. At that point, I was in. That amount of dedication deserves to be watched. And then I watched the pilot, and I really really wanted more, because Ruby Rose does a great internal Batwoman. Dealing with family, romantic relationships, and the desire to be more, I loved her so much. For those who aren't aware, Batwoman is not a Batman replacement; she has her own comic books, and they've worked together before. I think both characters are cool, and the pilot does not in any way demean Batman (for those people who worried about it). There's just a misunderstanding that gets resolved early, so no worries. Is it perfect? No TV show is perfect, but it's very enjoyable. And, it's nice to have a main female character with complex feelings dealing with life, while wanting to stand up to injustice and help others. And, yeah, also a smart escape artist, which is pretty awesome, not going to lie. If you're afraid of women being awesome, yeah, probably not your cup of tea, but for everyone else, enjoy! :o)

Best new series in a long time, hoping for a very long run..
The character (and actor) interactions are top notch. The Batman mythos is there in the Tech and several easter eggs - but takes a back seat to the drama. The story line is willing to push the envelope in a few areas and I have given them full marks for doing so. The soundtrack in the first 4 episodes was spot on, and perfect for the action/ drama on the screen. My sincere hope is that they continue to invest the time to do that aspect right - it makes a big difference. A little dark and gritty, but that is perfect here. They seem to have found the perfect formula for this series. There is action, drama, tech toys, great music, surprises and lots of fun easter eggs for fans. Perfect.

Really liked this!
Just finished watching the last episode. Very good! I love Kate and her step-sister Mary. Alice is a great villain and I really like Mouse as well. Great stories. Great villains. There are some really, really good fight scenes. The aesthetic of the whole series is really fantastic and very Gotham. The entire season is very much in keeping with the best of Batman.

Nice addition to the DC TV universe.
Really enjoyed this series so far. Nice addition to the DC TV universe and the Crisis Cross over event. Anxious to see what the next season brings; although with a switch of the main character I am apprehensive about it. I was just starting to like the main character. If you are enjoying the other DC TV universe shows, I think you will like this one too.
