Great for quiet dynamic mics
While the cables feel a little cheap, unless you're gping to be rubbing your XLR cables across power cables, or you live near a radio station, you should be fine. The DM-1 itself, however, is a different story: I cleans up my mixer's garbage preamps pretty nicely, and the 28db of gain it provides is absolutely neccessary for very quiet mics like the Shure SM7B or SE Electronics V7, especially if you're using a cheap mixer or interface, or if you're even simply using a really long XLR Cable.

THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE NEEDED.
For years I have been struggling with getting my vocals to sound right and not have to amplify which makes the background buzz or noises louder. Vocals have always been too rough and hurt my ears......this solved that fully. There is now a big difference between the sound floor and the vocals, has eliminated all ambient sound issues and made everything easier. Wish I would have bought one sooner.

There should be no sound in a pre amp so that question us a misnomer. It is as quiet as it should be and adds more than enough punch to the microphone.

It does the job that others will charge you more for but..........
The only issue with this product is that you have to be careful not to push on it from the side. It fits snugly and clips in securely but, if you push on it from the side, it will become wobbly and eventually cause contact problems. I know this because it happened to me. I am not upset with the product, it was my own fault and something that I should have been more careful with. Thankfully it did not cause any damage to my equipment and only required me to replace the unit. A quick and easy fix for this is to put some foam between it and the mic extension then put a couple of velcro pieces around it to hold it in place if you do push on it. I love the product and the fact that I do not have another piece of equipment sitting on my desk. It is well worth the money, you just have to be careful to not be ham fisted on it as i was.
